Absolutely tragic what was on display :(
Forget what I said. ****ing lame. Whoever thought of that should be dragged out in the street and shot.
Really not much fun watching Vettel weigh himself with 5 minutes left in Q3 and those Merc still out on the track. Looks like l can sleep in on Saturdays and miss qualifying vs falling asleep DURING QUALIFYING. LOL
+1 A couple of drivers were on laps that would have easily got them a better grid position and through to the next qualifying session, but due to running out of the 90 second time period the time didn't count so they were out! - It was ridiculous!, every fast lap should count in qualifying! At least the FIA are looking at going straight back to the old qualifying system from the next race!
(From: In quotes: The verdict on new F1 qualifying - Formula 1 - Eurosport Australia ) In quotes: The verdict on new F1 qualifying BERNIE ECCLESTONE - "Pretty crap" "I have to say I wasn't enthusiastic about it from day one. It was pretty crap." (Okay, to be fair Bernie changes his tune depending on which way the wind is blowing at the time, but this was his reaction to the qualifying debacle!)
The team bosses are having an emergency meeting about it and word is the FIA revert to the 2015 qualifying system (Team bosses hold emergency talks after qualifying debacle - Formula 1 - Eurosport Australia )
eliminate 6 and 6 in Q1 and Q2, Q3 10 cars 10 minute shootout hilarious looking at drivers walking away with 5 min still on the clock
I'm not laughing. I remember when qualifying was often more entertaining than the race. Sadly this may still be true even with this new qualifying scheme.
I think the only two teams who didn't feel as though the new qualifying system had short changed them were Mercedes and Ferrari, and I suspect they will feel that they would have had the same result with the previous system anyway so it would make little difference to them to revert to the old system. Meanwhile, I think just about every other team felt that they weren't given a fair chance to qualify well and so they will be eager to revert to the old system. This is one of those rare situations in F1 where every team will agree that the new system is wrong and that they should revert back to the old system. Even those who benefited from the new system are saying that it was an embarrassment to the sport and not only short changed the teams and drivers, but also badly short changed the fans.
I like your half-glass-full thinking, I can go with that too. But the racing is going to be sh!et anyways, why bother watching the race also? Merc have it in the bag w 1-1.4s (conservatively) in their pocket, that's a heck of a lot of ground to cover by Ferrari w only 9 development tokens left at their disposal. You could see the disappointment in Vettel's face and remarks during his post-qualy interview. He kept posturing about a "long season", but in his head I'm sure he's thinking there's no way Ferrari is going to beat Merc in the development race and his shot at a wdc this year is going to boil down to sheer luck.
+1 I would be absolutely stunned if they don't fix this mess ahead of Bahrain. From the the post qualy interviews I watched, they were all 'embarrassed'. And rightly so As with them, I was prepared to give it a chance. It obviously failed. Put it down to experience, & get 'er fixed! Cheers, Ian
Bernie's thoughts on qualy: Hey Bernie, just an FYI, Merc are still first and second even in the new format lolololol.
Dead time at the beginning or dead time at the end. It's still dead time. Yet this was completely dead time. Wow, checkered flag with an empty track. Any fast lap should count as long as the team is trying. Have to give some credit for trying something. Need to get more cars on track. Exend the time and maybe the top 6 times are reset at the halfway point for each Q session? Can't believe tires are limited. Give them all they want. Fuel too.
Well, I didn't think it was possible, but the qualifying was actually more lame than Hamilton's diamonds and gold chains. Bravo FIA, that's simply amazing.
FLYING laps should count, leave the 90 seconds in if you must, but let the flying lap you are in within that 90 seconds count.......give em all the tires they want for Qualy, bring a real show, or revert to the older system. Hopefully the FIA and Bernie can admit this was a poor result and make the needed change. As a paying fan I would have been rather disappointed.
Yup, let flying laps count and it should fix part of the mess. No idea why ferrari didn't try to set a faster lap at the end of q3, both cars had plenty of time.
That was one of the things that annoyed Me most - Drivers who were on a lap that was much faster than required to get a better grid position or get through to the next session either had to abandon the lap as the 90 seconds were up, or completed the lap, showing how fast they would have been, only to see it not count due to a stupid clock running down. It was a bit like an NFL game where, with 2 seconds of the first half left, a quarterback throws a pass that gets caught for a touchdown but is ruled out because the clock ran down to zero whilst the ball was in mid air! +1 Couldn't agree more! As a paying fan I would have been seriously p:censored:d off!
And yet all these so called clever people agreed to try this new style of qualifying ... I can see that it is not just Bernie who is a F wit but every single decision maker involved in F1. How about going back to the qualifying and racing rules used by every other circuit racing class and stop trying to think F1 is any different. Its just another class of circuit racing, not made by God himself as something uniquely special. They are so up their own @rses it is just a joke. Pete
From what I gathered from Skysports, it sounds like this new format was a compromise. Someone else really wanted that reverse grid or ballast penalties, so they all settled on this format which turned out to be crap. Seems we will be going back to the old format sooner rather than later, or at least this format will be tweaked before the next race.
