The new format really was ridiculous. After hearing about it, I'd thought it could be interesting, worth a try. The details, though, eliminated any possibility - the dropout every 90 seconds, even with cars in mid-lap, meant many teams didn't even try. If their car wasn't on track 3.5 or 4 minutes prior to the drop-out timer, they wouldn't complete a flying lap. If they did complete a flying lap to improve a bit and miss a drop-out, guaranteed they couldn't have the car serviced and back out to try to avoid the next one, so they just parked it.

Seriously, if they want more cars committed on track during the qualifying hour and less dead track time, just keep the old rules but make it 4 qualifying sessions instead of 3, ensuring the sessions are long enough to allow at least 2 flying laps. It would have the desired effect, still keep showdowns as drivers finish their laps after the session time expires, etc.

The 90 second rule means that teams don't have enough time to pit, tweak the setup, and get back out in time. Has to be done very early in the qualifying session.

So the lesser teams who need more time to tweak have less. Thus Merc and SF have little to worry about lesser teams catching them late in the session. They can park earlier.

As I said, this would just result in an empty second half of a session.

The *real* solution, is a tire that doesn't fall off pace in 1 lap, or, at minimum, not starting the race on your qualifying tires.

And for once at least, seems they *all* agreed (very unusual as we know) to **** can this nonsense.

    So that's a little progress.

You only realized that now? Look at the all the rules in general and it's clear no brains or logic were used in the decision making process.

I'm just going to say it... I was wrong. I tried to have faith that it wouldn't be terrible, but, it was.

I too was prepared to give it a try..... 'Keep an open mind' & so on.

Turns out it was a disaster. The good news is that they recognized that PDQ, and it's gone next race.

    Cheers,
    Ian

I also with the same views: it was terrible with capital T. It seemed to be a
micro-management quali instead of a proper qualifying session. Going by the seconds
makes it really difficult to improve; that was the point of a qulifying session, start a
base run and improve during the session, albeit with limited time. Now it's like a
bad penalty shotout. I'm glad it was an experiment and it's now over.

Whenever an organization contemplates a major change, they need to "game" it to predict how it will roll out. Too often the excitement surrounding the change and its anticipated benefits obscure reality. This is a textbook example of what this error looks like.

If they would have allowed drivers to complete their final lap even after the 90 seconds was up, it would have been okay. But needing 4+ minutes to do their outlap and then their hot lap, that was stupid.

+1. Yes, several drivers were on their flying laps just to realize that they were not going to
make it. Image this qualifying format in the old Hockenheim circuit or in Singapore in which
a lap is closer to 2 minutes.
