i had a little problem a couple of days ago... after driving a few miles i stopped and was unable to get the car back in 1st gear.. when i pulled the shift lever the trans would shift to 1st gear and back to "N" within a second.after holding the shift lever and quickly shifting to 2nd i was able to get home..i called various ferrari service centers and they had no idea what would cause the problem. i started reading the owners manual and found that if the engine cover was open that the F1 trans would not stay in first gear.knowing that the cover was shut i started looking for another problem . i found that the electrical switch on the hood latch had slipped out of place telling the car that the cover was open...took less than 1 minute to fix and probably saved me alot of $$$$$ by not needing the ferrari dealership to trace out the problem....

Drivers door latch and the brake light sw can cause similar failures. I don't remember on the 355 but on the 360 the brake light sw has 2 sets of contacts, one for the lights, one for the F1. If the sw goes bad or is slightly out of adj the F1 sys does not know you have your foot on the brake and won't go into gear. A working brake light is not an acceptable diagnosis for an operative sw.
