This used to happen once in a blue moon but now it seems to be happening more and more often. When I first start up the car to go for a drive, whether I try to put it in Reverse first or in first gear it wont go. For eg, If i put I try and put it in reverse it wont go no matter how many times i try, until I put it in first then I have to put it in reverse. The same thing happens if I try and go to drive first, I gotta put it into reverse then into drive. Anyone experience anything like this?

This happens occasionally, even after a new clutch. For me it generally happens when it is colder and with fall upon us this could be your issue. Let the car warm up a minute or two then it will go into gear smoothly.

    possibilities:
    1. Clutch alignment. Special tool needed, and likely SDx tool.
    2. Position sensor going bad. There are a few.
    3. Worn clutch. Have heard warn clutches doing this, you can take to to your service dept and have them check the clutch life %.

Please let us know what it was once resolved. It helps build the knowledge base here.

When it happens, turn off the car and then turn it back on. I'll bet it shifts and acts normal. I'd also say that once the car is moving, there is no problem shifting while driving. Have you seen the F1 light come on when you can't shift, or flash once and then go off? The F1 light may or may not happen but the symptoms as you describe will be there.

I just went thru this and it seems my problem was a clutch position sensor as found by the SD2. My 02 car has something just shy of 20k miles.

It was a bit scary with the possibility of being stranded somewhere. But turning the car off and then on, fixed the start-up shifting every time. Of course you don't want that to be the solution (or having premium AAA towing).
Not saying that your issue is the same as mine but my startup symptoms were as you described. It's not an inexpensive fix if it is in fact the position sensor. Have it diagnosed. PM if you need more details

Ya I will play around with it more this week and see if letting it warm up helps. Closest dealer is a 3 hour drive... Gonna do my major service over the winter and have them check it out. Car has 32,000 Kilometres on it now, and it is the original clutch. Also ONCE IN A BLUE MOON, when shifting in sport mode at 8k rpm from 1st to 2nd it goes bobble bobble bobble then jump into 3rd gear.... Wonder if this is related to clutch as well.
