I have not driven a F1 Ferrari yet, and was wondering what happens
if you have it set to manual mode and you do not shift up, does it do it for
you or does it just redline and stay there? Also does it stop you from doing stupid things like trying to down shift into first when doing 100 mph? I always wondered if the transmission did what you want or what it thought/knew was best.

Tony, I have a couple of times, hit the downshift paddle when trying to dim my lights suddendly at night. The car will downshift only if you are in the rpm or speed range that is acceptable. As you slow down for a stop, the tranny will automatically go into 1st if you don't manually downshift.
I've never tried to run it at redline w/o shifting but I believe it will just stay in the gear you have selected. I shift more from the sound than the tach anyway, but I have tubi and straightpipes so there is no doubt about when to shift. I was a bit skeptical about f1 at first but have come to really apprecitate being able to always keep both hands on the wheel and the ease of shifting quickly. I love having a car with a manual and an F1 car too, thats the best of both worlds.

As John said the sys will not let you down shift if it will hurt something. If you ignore it at redline long enough it will upshift itself also, but it takes a couple of seconds. Even in man. mode if you slow below a speed that makes any sense for the gear you are in it will downshift for you, all the way from 6th to 1st. In general the programming is full of safeguards to keep you from doing something stupid.

On my 360 Modena I had, it would upshift at redline when NOT in sport mode. In sport mode, it would just keep bumping itself off the rev limiter.

    Thanks guys!

I watched a 5th gear episode where Tiff Needell was driving an Aston Martin and was complaining about the car not shifting when demanded to do so. It sure seems like it would be frustrating to drive a F1 tranny if to the car is was a recommendation and not a command. I assume that in a Ferrari,if you are not requesting an unsafe gear change it responds in under a second. I am dreaming about those Formula 1 sounds of cars quickly downshifting into corners.

Don't confuse the Aston "paddle shift" with a real manual transmission like the Ferrari F1's. Astons have slushboxes with clever programming to give you downshift blips and the feeling of a manual, but it is still a torque convertor.
The F cars are real manual transmissions, that are programmed to shift up at redline when not in Sports mode, but if you select sport (or race in the CS) the transmission will upshift only when you tell it to. It will downshift if the revs and speed of the car are not sufficient to maintain forward motion.
