I'm thinking of buying 98 355 with 5000 miles. A ferrari mechanic is telling me to stay away from the F1 tranny and go with a manual. Has anybody had problems with the F1 transmissions?

355 F1 is as good as the person who sets it up - there's about a million threads about them - spend some time looking thro this section

Search is your friend here but I'll give you a synopsis. Guys that own cars with an F1 (myself included) will tell you they are reliable and we love them. Even if they break, the price to fix them has gone waaay down thanks to Ricambi and Hill Engineering. Guys with a manual will say the gated shifter is the only way to go and guys that don't own a Ferrari but speculate will give you all sorts of mixed messages. Reality is get a solid PPI on the car and, assuming it checks out, go with how you feel on driving an F1. To me, it's personal preference.

I have an F1 tranny in my 355 and it's been fine. The advice posted above is as about as good as advice can get. Ultimately it is up to you.
