Hi, I am new to this forum but spent about an hour reading it - you guys definatley seem like a knowledgeble crowd of enthusiasts.

Looking to get into ether 03/04 360, or new 430, depending on how cheap 360's will get this winter. I currently drive 06 Carrera C4S, and that is of the the sleekest gear boxes in the business. My dilemma is do I go for F1 or I don't. I understand that F1 trans. will shift quicker that I will most of the time, as well as deliver perfect heel-and-toe downshifts. I have done my share of club racing and understand the concept well - F1 would be very efficient to drive at the track, also a lot easier. How about plain fun to drive factor? I am not planning to taking it to the track, just drive it hard in the city. How is Ferrari 6 speed ? Is it easy to shift? Those gates require you to be more prescise than if you didn't have them? Pedals placed close enough for heel-and-toe? I am truly leaning towards conventional 6 speed - yes, it will not look as perfect as F1, but those would be my mistakes - I participated in the process. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks in advance

The manual gear box on the 360 is very nice. I like the 6 speed manual myself.

    I just went from an F1 in my 360 to a 6-sp in my 430. I owned a 997 C4S with sport shifter a few months ago.

The F1 is very convienient, but in some ways it sort of is the worst of both worlds. You still shift (never used auto) but you kind of feel goofy doing it. But great when there is a cup pf hot coffee in your hands.

The Ferrari clutch is about the same weight as the Porsche and likewise engagement is high so you don't need it to go to the floor for shifts. The gate is a little wider onthe F but nicely spring loaded. The only trick is 2-3 where you just push foward and let the spring do its thing, dont guide it or you may get caught between the notches. Not a big deal unless your running hard.

All in all it is a very nice smooth box and clutch.

I own a C4 as well and can tell you that of all the Ferrari's I've owned none of their 6 or 5 speed manuals get close to the P car manuals. As to my F430, it's an F1 and I like it a lot. Guess which one I'd recomend. :)

Thanks for all reply's. Did you owned 360 among your cars to compare with C4?

Also, can somebody that owned both cars comment on pedal alighment?
As how easy it it to heel-and-toe in 360 ( or 430 for that matter) vs near
    perfect porsche set up?

No on the 360. As to heal toe, I would have to give the nod to the F430 over the C4.

My 360 was F1, but the 430 is the best heel-toe I've ever had, and I had a 997 C4S. It is perfect. Moderate brake pressure levels the pedals, I found I had to roll my foot a little more on the Porsche.

Drove my brother's F1 F430 quite a bit this weekend and found the paddles rather pleasant to use. Then got back in my GT3 RS and remembered how much more fun and involving a manual is. Go with the manual. Besides, this may well be the last generation of Ferraris that offer the manual option. Enjoy it while you still can.

    Definately manual!!

As a very new member and owning a 360 only for a week, I had first really negative thoughts going back to manual after enjoying SMG's with my M3/ M5/ M6.

In my opinion, manual shifting works fine and the fun factor is number one, when You can Yourself control engine rpm's when downshifting etc.!!

    SO go for the manual!

Bought my C4S cab in late March. Installed supercharger (did I say I like them fast?) in July. Another car crashed into my car (my car was not moving, I wasn't even there) in August and I traded it in Sept for a 997TT. I hate a car that has had any damage. My brain has enough damage as it is.

Don't bother to tell me I'm sick, I know it but I can't find a 12 step for caraholism!

I had a 2002 360 F1 and got rid of it. Recently replaced with a 2001 360 6-speed. The F1 made me feel disconnected from the driving experience. The F1 in the 430 however is a drastic leap forward in performance and technology. If you are going to track the car, use it while drinking coffee or concerned about resale, F1 on a 430 is the way to go. If your main concern is visceral driving experience then a manual in any car, 360, 430, whatever, should be your first choice. The F1 in the 360 is not that great IMO, and feel 6-speeds will be more desireable in the long run.

Coming from a racing background, the pedals in the 360 are appropriately placed for excellent foot maneuverability. Shifting is smooth, but different from a P-Car. Revs have to be a little higher to get a smooth transition from any gear after first.

Having owned an NSX (renowned for the slickest manual shift in the business), I actually prefer the 360 6-speed manual box. The car practically shifts itself.
I drove an F1 and it felt like I was manually shifting a car with an automatic with a shift kit in it.

Well...everyone will tell you Capristo, but you may want to check out the X-Ost, Novitech and even the Tubi. Then there's the bypass valve issue.

    Oh crud....wrong thread :) :) :) :) :) :)

    I concur with the majority....6-speed

If you want to run at the track, kick butt through the canyons or just love the gimmick-technology...then F1 is your thing. If you want to be part of the machine, then rowing through the gears is fulfilling.

The thing that got me down the most about the F1 was the downshifts, they aren't smooth and it slaps you around a bit. Just an opinion.

I can't believe we haven't discussed this topic before??? ;)

The nature of the question will get the answers you are seeing. Remember that the 6-speed guys have a very strong opinion about the manual/F1 question.

I originally wanted a 6-speed. Then I drove an F1 and I like it. Now, after driving the F-car for a while I get back in my M and find myself looking for the paddles.

Both have their place. They provide a different experience but both are a lot of fun. It all comes down to what you preffer.

is there a chance that ferrari will stop offering the 6 speeds? and only have F1? I'm hoping that will not be the case as when I can afford one, i will most defiently want a 6 speed. Can anyone see ferrari doing this?

I'm absolutely certain that manual Ferraris will soon be history. And it's more than just a hunch. I recently read in one of the mags where one of the Ferrari engineering bosses stated as much. If I can find the quote I'll post it. I suspect this is the last generation that will have a manual option.

I also believe the F1 system will soon be tossed. In its place I expect to see a twin clutch 'box like Volkswagen's DSG. Pretty sure Porsche will have such a system next year. And I bet BMW is working on one too.

Purists are no longer part of the marketing equation. People just gotta have their rain-sensing wipers, right?

"If it was up to Maurizio Manfredini, the man in charge of 12-cylinder Ferraris, the F1 transmission would be the only method of changing gears... ...and Ferrari execs at the (599) launch hinted that the next generation of Maranello's products would probably be two-pedal only."

How did you arrive at that guess?

You might take into consideration that Ferrari (and tifosi, etc) make a big hullabaloo about F1 heritage.

You might also consider that Ferraris are always in short supply.

And lastly, for now <chuckle>, consider how many Ferrari owners buy them for .... shall we say .... *style* .... and not necesarily to drive them as Enzo would have us drive them.

My WAG: When/if they settle for F1 trannys only .... Ferrari sales will *increase* by 30%. ;-)

    Regards,

    Richard.
