What are your opinions on driving the 360/430 with an F1 vs. manual gearbox. I personally enjoy driving all my previous sports cars (generally Porsches) with a traditional manual gearbox. I have driven the Gallardo E-Gear as well as the Ferrari/Maserati in F1, but I still find myself wanting to drive the Ferrari in a manual.

What are your experiences with driving Ferraris with a traditional gearbox? Miller Motorcars said that 90% of their cars have the F1. Do you feel disconnected from the car with the F1?

Thanks for your input in advance.

I owned 328 and 512TR manual, plus '69 Shelby GT500 4sp. Now have F430 F1. I miss shifting any of the manual gearboxes . . . until I remember actually shifting them. I suppose if I drove the manual very little then I would call it a fun drive. But the longer I drive on any given trip the less I enjoy the gated Ferrari shifter compared to paddles. I understand the fun of managing your own clutch and shift points, but the F1 gives me enough to satisfy those desires.

Its a personal choice, no answer is right or wrong. However I think you have answered the question yourself!!! From your post info I'd say get the manual.

I have a 348tb and a 360 Modena, both are manuals. Obviously I had no choice with the 348 as no F1 was available. However I specially searched for the manual 360 in preference over the F1. This wasn't as easy as you may think as approx 70% of 360's are F1's. The manual box is more reliable and generally the clutch last longer than the F1, less to go wrong with a manual even though both the manual and F1 are essentially the same gearbox. I just don't like the idea of the electrics and Hydraulics in the F1 as these cars get older. I love the manual box on the 360 which is a joy to use and light years beter than the 348 box (Which is a pig when cold but does get better once warm. I have changed the oil to Redline lightweight shockproof which has helped and now I can get 2nd when cold). I feel the open shift gate and action of shifting gears manually is very much part of driving a Ferrari. Pulling paddles can get quite boring in my opinion.

The F1 box is fantastic on a race track so if you were intending to do lots of track days I'd say get the F1. For everyday driving I personally feel the manual is better. I do not do any track days and hence would take the manual every time.

Thats my 10c worth. For everyone who recommends the manual there will be someone who prefers the F1. Pay your money and take your pick.

Actually there will be a ratio of about 9:1 favoring the F1.
