Can any of you enlightened folk tell me why in the motoring press they talk about 65 milisecond shift changes on SMG and 150 on Ferrari F1's when i had read that its generally accepted that Ferrari are leaders on integrating the F1 boxes into their cars?

Don't know but I test drove an M3CSL at the weekend and the gear changes in sport mode were ultra quick - maybe 'cause a sequential gearbox (similar to motor bike's one) are generally quicker and Ferrari uses a tradition gearbox on its cars with F1 technology to move the gears. (I could and probably am talking a lot of cr@P)

Loved it - as quick if not quicker than the 355, handles better too (this one was on Cup tyres - slicks !!), nice 'bucket' seats, great noise in Sport mode - although not as nice a tubi'd Ferrari. Was a bit worried the SMG might take a bit of getting use to but it was quite easy to drive straight from the off. The feeback through the steering was great but I couldn't help but feel a little bit out of control not having a clutch pedal - I think it is just a matter of getting use to it. With a manual gearbox you can almost feel the power feeding through the clutch as you change gear you don't get any of this through the SMG.

    Rick,

Something to consider- Ask AMD in Bicester, Oxon about their M3 to CSL conversion. The one in the article had the buckets, carbon fibre trim, plus some engine and exhaust enhancements. I've read a review which said it was great, and in many ways nicer to drive than a real one! Plus, you could get one with a manual, and get it just as you wanted...
