With Ferrari set to introduce the new 740 hp F12 Berlinetta and Lamborghini now selling the Aventador, it reminds me of an era where the two marques competed with similar cars.

I refer to the Daytona vs the Miura. I am so glad to see that the Aventador is still such a raw and raucous animal that evokes primal emotions, as per the Miura. The F12 is a technical masterpiece, sure to excite the Tifosi. With both cars producing 700hp or more, this is truly a golden era... one that I am so glad to witness.

I can't help but be proud of Lamborghini for such a Tyrant of a car, and wonder why Ferrari has produced a somewhat generic looking car. By that I mean, the lines are beautiful, but not exotic, almost Genesis Coupe like. I can't wait to see one in person, but as it sits now,
Lambo, as they did in the 60's/70's with the Miura/Countach have trumped Ferrari in the wow factor once again.

    Let the comparisons begin!

    It's always been like that

Lambo leads and the people from Maranello follows

    Miura - Daytona
Urraco - 308GT4 which afterwards became Ferrari's signature car by removing the back seats ...
    Countach - BB

    and so on ...

These two cars are apples and oranges.

It's better to look at whatever the replacement of the Gallardo is vs the 458 vs the McLaren Mp4-12c.

Comparing the F12 to the Lambo Aventador is like comparing Audrey Hepburn to Marilyn Monroe. Both are beautiful but both are completely different looking on their own.

The cars were made for different clients and for different purposes. They only complete by price point.

As to Martin's post, I would like to remind you that if there were no Ferrari, there would be no Lamborghini. So, who led and who followed? :)

As if these logical points would stop anyone. We all know the publications are drooling for the comparo. But hey, I'd love to flog both and call that work too...

Do you really think people buy a 400K car based on what a magazine review says?

People buy what they like. What the press says doesn't matter. They are there to sell magazines.

These cars appeal to two different people. That's why they look the way they look.

Of course I don't, I was merely saying that you made a good point of these two cars being very different but that means nothing to all the publications and fans that want to see these two go head to head (including this thread). Really, why take this so seriously?

Because it's Fchat. Everything on Fchat is terribly serious! :)

Actually, you should check out what some are saying in the F12 section. There's some really serious love and hate going on there.

I do love the Aventador. I think it's marvelous. But, I also like the F12 for different reasons. I don't think that you need to treat them mutually exclusively as the OP implied.

Wonder if the new McLaren would be a hotter item were the press to have been a bit friendlier from the get-go.

You know, as I think about this comment, it is interesting. Certainly, as grown men I think we’d agree with this. However, as an impressionable teenager, I was really influenced by some of rags ( e.g. Car & Driver, Road & Track, etc.) of my youth. I am certain that fueled my fire for cars such as the Countach and that enthusiasm remains today.

I really like the Aventador. But park an ol`LP400 next to it - the Countach is still the more radial car!
Only one other car was designed on that league - the Bugatti Type 57SC "Atlantic" and that was in the 30s.
The now almost 40 year old LP400 is still a masterpiece and the automotive world still waits for another real (!) masterpiece since.

Those who I know decided one way or the other did so on their own preferences and blew off the press accounts entirely. But, negative press is more difficult to overcome than good press for sure. You never know what people think down the line.

When you're buying a super car, you buy it for the emotion, not the practicality. The 458, the Mp4-12c, the F12, and the Aventador each have their own story to tell.

No. These are the flagship models of each manufacturer, they are direct competitors, especially from a price point perspective.

It would seem to me that if the press consensus swung against a certain car, giving a car such as a the McLaren a bad rap in general, that may affect the buying habits of those with a lot of money who just want a fast and flashy car.

I'm sure the larger exotic manufacturers unfortunately do need these customers to produce a profitable number of cars. My question is, what sort of percentage of the customer base do these sort of people make up?

I saw a white Aventador in the flesh not long ago in Miami and it was quite impressive in terms of road presence and awe factor.

Lambos are supposed to do that, shock people.

The F12 will be faster and more usable than the Aventador, much like the 599GTB was with the Murcielago, but totally different customers!

So, a Rolls is also a competitor?

They are designed for different people with different tastes and needs. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's a good thing. Why would we want them the same?

I think exotic owners-- most of which have bought them in the past -- understand that magazines and car shows are there to sell themselves. A critic is like a certain part of one's anatomy. Everyone has one.

I laugh at the stupidity of Top Gear. When a new Ferrari comes out it's the greatest machine ever. When the car replacement comes out then the old one suddenly has all these terrible attributes they moan about. So, which is it? Was it the greatest ever or a piece of junk?

If you like the car you're not going to look too deeply at the output of someone's body part.

"radial" - you meant "radical" (only a mistake in typing).

Very good statement, exactly my point of view. You got it! On my desk, I have two wonderful boxes, each covering a 1/18 scale model of my two favourite cars. The first is a yellow LP400 model by Kyosho (unfortunately the interior isn't tabacco but black), the other is an Atlantic by CMC (black Ralph Lauren version). Side by side, they look great and IMO (!) no other street car comes close to these two iconic pieces of history and art.

i can think of few (quite old...) cars coming close as design masterpieces:

    - bizzarrini 5300 GT (....but is missing an italian V12...;) )
    - Ferrari 250 GTO (or the 275 GTB)
    - miura

still not on pair with countach and Atlantic in the "radical" design (imo)

I haven't grown to really liking the Aventador yet, though I think it is a cool car. I also think it's overdone. The Murcielago is my favorite Lambo....followed by the Miura.

Ferrari has always topped Lambo in my eyes....until now. I'd take the Murci or Aventador over the Kia/Hyundai-looking F12.

    My favorite Ferrari's remain the 575 and 599....with the Enzo, F50, 458, 430, 360 and 355 closely behind.

My preferences are based on looks alone. I've been in all these cars (except the Aventador and F12) but sadly, never driven any of them.

The published performance figures show the Aventador to be the faster car and it should be as it is a true mid-engined performance car while the F12 is a grand tourer albeit arguably the best GT out there now. I like both cars but prefer the Aventador due it being a better fit with my personal taste. I also like the 458 Spider...
