Just bought a F12 and that 12 cyl. is thirsty! How accurate is the gas gauge? Has anyone run out of gas in theirs? I'm wondering when it says 25 miles left to go until empty, is that pretty close to being right? Thanks for any help
Never left the gauge on my F12 go to close to empty and I always fill the tank before that happens. The impression I have is that the miles left to go until empty indicated on the gauge might be more or less trustable at a moderate steady speed, for example on a motorway, but when you are accelerating it can change very quickly.
Dave, One piece of advice, if I may: regardless of how accurate the instrument may be (and I would say it's fairly accurate in the case of my 458), never solely rely on it. I never left fuel in the tank reach below 1/4 and, if going at some pace, when the first bar on the fuel gauge drops below 1/2, I start actively searching for a convenient fuel station. Ferrari engines, being high performace oriented, use a lot of fuel when you're driving in a spirited fashion or when you're simply idling in a cold start. When on the road, unforeseen things can occur: a traffic jam, a detour, etc. Never run (that) low on fuel. Also, it can't be good for a Ferrari engine to have its fuel pump sucking on air. I've never run out but I've pushed it. It's fairly accurate. I still try to not get below 2 bars. Also this thing is THIRSTY.
I assume when 3 bars left the car needs filling as the drop to 1bar can be very quick. Same in F12 and FF
Last week I filled up just when the gauge dropped to last 1 bar out of 9. Took 80 litres to fill the tank which is approx 90 litres. So I would say the gauge is fairly accurate. However, the indicated range is highly variable based on driving style as other's have pointed out. While attacking some haripins on an Alpine pass, used up 1 bar within about 15 miles!
With the F12 when I see 3 bars left I start thinking about my driving style at the moment and fuel. If I am driving in sport and driving somewhat gently/ highway/ then I can rely on the miles to empty gauge- but 2 bars means fill up. If I am driving back roads and in Race then I look for the nearest gas station within 15 miles. Keep in mind in addition to other things, Sport and Race use different engine/ throttle maps. If you are running low on fuel I would go to the least aggressive mode and also select the highest possible gear. F12 is very thirsty.
Another thing that makes it difficult is the lack of linear relationship between the amount of fuel in the gas tank and the number of bar, ie, highway cruising at around 80-85mph for around 100miles will take off only the 1st bar. For the next 100 miles, I cannot say for sure.
The rule is on these V12 Ferrari’s is that one tick = 2 gallons. When you’re down to 2 ticks you’re basically at 4 gallons. Depending on how hard you’re driving at that moment that could mean you get 40 miles or 80 miles.
When you are getting low the car limits the power to help you save petrol, [ warning message says this] it works out this on your driving style so if you have been hammering it, it comes on early. This happened to me on my last lap at Silverstone, I had still had enough petrol to leave the circuit and drive 5 miles down the road to fill up [ at very low speed though as I was scared of running out]. 1 tank lasted 1hour 20 mins! Driving in France it lasted 4/5 hours in automatic on motorway at 75/ 80 mph with the cruise control on.
