Our son-in-law from FL came to visit us for a few days. He asked if we could do a drive on some of the mountain roads nearby. The 599 is out for service and the 458 is in FL. So that left the SA and F12. I chose to drive The Rattler since it's just a few miles from our home. It runs from I-40 to Hot Springs NC. Starts with some wide open roads you can run fast followed by a twisty section going up and back down the mountains. In the middle are some sweepers and straights to fly. It ends w/ more twisties up to Hot Springs.

I drove the F12 on the way up while he followed me in the SA. The F12 is powerful and a bit of a handful but rides smoothly and has solid brakes. I had new tires just mounted so was experiencing the best it could be. It certainly is fast. After a coffee stop in Hot Springs we switched for the reverse drive home.

The SA was running on old tires [8 years!!] that were a bit worn too. I put the top down and pushed. Compared to the dual clutch lightning speed shifting the SA was a dinosaur. And the brakes certainly didn't have the stopping power of the F12. But the engine exhaust sounds are exhilarating compared to the F12. Maybe the old tech and nannies lacking in the SA I felt I was more involved than I was in the F12. I had a blast in the SA. More fun than the superior specs of the F12.

My son-in-law said he felt more comfortable in the F12 than the SA. Of course he doesn't have my decades of seat time in the many Fcars I have had over the last 45 years. For a newbie the F12 will give more confidence and a feeling of safety than that of the SA.

Glad we did this run. It convinced me that the SA is truly a keeper. The F12 [and my 599] will be on the market soon to make room for an eventually delivered 812 GTS. The SA will stay in my garage.

    Nice post.

On top of it all, a great day with the son-in-law bonding over the best cars on earth. Glad you are able to share. Never driven either, but I'm partial to the SA for sure!

Posts like this are why we own these cars :)

PS - saw the comment about 8 year old and worn tires... replacements considered?

F12/812 are pretty awsome machines. But honestly they are way too much car. Useless in fact. To the point of not even being fun anymore.

After driving the SA and F12 it makes me wonder if I will connect with the 812 GTS when it arrives.
After spending the 4th holiday in FL now I am driving the 458 Spider home. Did 7 hours of boring driving today. When I get it home to the mountains I want to see if I like the car. Have not spent enough time in it yet to know.

He took me to Ferrari of Tampa to pick up my 458. I gave it to him for a couple of days. He likes it better than the F12. I think I am becoming a bad influence on him..,lol.

Ferrari has removed the fun for tech. The cars are amazing but stressful to drive. Way too much going on. Too expensive and honestly way too fast to even remotely have fun with. They have indeed become visual extension of your wallet size. Far from the enthusiast car they once were

Great post, looks like they’ve paved The Rattler since I was there last year. In super twisty roads like that, running with T/C off in the 458 can be rewarding if you don’t overdo the throttle, and there are plenty of compression turns where the car is fully loaded. Also a lot of blind turns.

Great road (one of the best) and the coffee wasn’t too bad in Hot Springs as I recall, lol……I may bring the STO or the F8 up that way in the fall and maybe we can hook up with @italiafan for a jaunt in the hills.

P.S. We gotta get you a nifty 16’ Aluma trailer. You can pull them with an SUV and they’re awesome if you trailer cars as much as I do.

With all that power comes responsibility. These cars can be driven with aggression, but training is a pre-requisite. The stress comes with the thought of consequences if something were to happen.

I tracked at Road Atlanta and VIR the past two weekends in the 458. It was the only Ferrari out there……..

I am sure you will. I own F12 tdf, 575SA and received my 812 GTS recently (drove 2400km since then) and this is a fantastic car. I see it as a fantastic machine for travel. It’s definitely a keeper (like the two others!).
