Will be very interesting to follow. It's a RHD car, Street legal, winning car. Sexy, sexy... Sale Date: 3rd December 2014 1995 Ferrari F355 Challenge Auction - Classic Car Auctions & Sale - H&H Estimate: (£) 75,000 - 95,000 Reg Number:L13 SSCChassis Number:ZFFPA41C000101515Engine Number:38852Cc:3496Body Colour: Rosso CorsaTrim Colour:Red / BlackMOT ExpiryDate:April 2015 - See more at: 1995 Ferrari F355 Challenge Auction - Classic Car Auctions & Sale - H&H And now for something rather special - ie Ferrari F355 Challenge chassis 101515, a street legal Ferrari race car; and a winning one at that! The fact is there was never an official road-legal F355 Challenge model, but the first five entered the UK as what might be described as incomplete projects - ie standard road cars (save for roll cage mounting points and lack of carpets) together with the box of goodies required to turn them into snarling racers. The packages were provided for the dealers to sell, but only one UK outlet, MHT, showed interest, so ended up buying and converting all five right-hand drive cars, including 101515. The conversion kit included: competition clutch; quick steering rack; firmer springs and dampers, and solid suspension bushes; a choice of exhausts; OMP bucket seats; Momo Type 88 steering wheel; ignition cut-off switch; safety harness; roll-cage; fire extinguisher; 18inch magnesium Speedline Corse wheels; Plexiglass rear window; Black-painted Challenge mesh grille; lighter front bumper; and Brembo brakes. Items removed from the standard car not surprisingly included the air conditioning system and the stereo system.Chassis 101515 was purchased by Alain Li of Richemont (ie Cartier, Montblanc, Van Cleef etc) fame and raced by him in both 1995 and 1996, before which, while running-in the engine, he used it (complete with racing graphics) for commuting and dropping his daughters off at school. On one occasion he was even stopped by the police, who were so excited by the Ferrari they summoned their colleagues to come and have a look. Li contested the European series with vigour as well as the UK-based 1995 Maranello Challenge Championship, in which he was the winner of Class C. Li part-exchanged Chassis 101515 for a new 355 Challenge car at the end of the 1996 season. Acquired by Robin Mortimer (the M of MHT) thereafter, it was converted to road going specification and passed through various hands before coming to the attention of John Greatorex of GT Cars, Warrington. Looking decidedly standard despite being advertised for sale as a Challenge car, it was only when he tapped the rear window and discovered it was Plexiglass not glass that he knew he'd stumbled on something special. So, he duly purchased the car and set about returning it to full Challenge specification, exactly as now offered. The only obvious difference is that standard F355 brakes have been retained, as the Challenge specification ones are expensive and unsuitable for road use. A new clutch has been installed and the cambelts renewed.`L13 SSC' (ie `Li 355 Challenge') comes complete with its Ferrari UK Immobiliser Installation Certificate and original book pack, the service record from which displays the following stamps: 984 miles (MHT); 8,168 (MHT); 12,219 (MHT); 23,031 (Chilton Car Clinic); 46,273 (Bob Houghton); 50,974 GT Cars - the odometer currently stands at 51,677 miles. Interim attention has been provided by MHT, DK Engineering, Talacrest, QV London, Bob Houghton and Performance Car Engineering of Wells, while its V5C Registration Document lists six former keepers. Interestingly, an extended warranty was granted to Dr Francis Wilkin in 1998 at an indicated 8,200 miles, suggesting the car's competition career had not been overly harsh/destructive. It also sports its original side glass etched with `A1515NGC', again pointing to a pleasing lack of contact. All told, `L13 SSC' represents a unique and exciting opportunity for Ferrari aficionados everywhere - a car sufficiently famous to be the subject of an upcoming article in Octane magazine and to have had a La Mini Miniera model made of it! - See more at: 1995 Ferrari F355 Challenge Auction - Classic Car Auctions & Sale - H&H Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Nice number plate. I call BS on the brakes though. I drive mine and the Challenge brakes are fine for street use. Should have the rear wing to finish the look.
be interesting to see the price. Its a good opportunity to buy a nice road going car that is not overly agressive (its been softened off to a road car and many wouldnt wat to live with the harshness of our race cars) ... but has nice provenance. Its supposed to be in octane soon, with my car!!!
I can not realise the sence/value of the Car - please help me! No proper race Car, no soft street legal race car just a Berlinetta with Alain Li title And much more stressed than a normal Berlinetta. why not buy a GTB in good shape for the half Price?
You apparently don't understand Ferraris. Anything with a winning race history is worth more, and the '95 355C's being the very last of the Ferraris that could be driven to the race track and raced are going to be worth decent money imo. The fact that this car did exactly that double duty in period gives it interesting history with race wins. The factory competition parts on it are not cheap, either.
Boy, I have a F355CH with Race History .....and its street legal! The Car has all the CH Equipment as in 1995/1996 when it was raced, only headlights, Folights, handbrake and Horn are added. There is no reason to remove the CH brakes, harness, lexan rear Window.....
I agree, for Street use it makes sence to remove the dampers, Race ABS, Challenge muffler Fire system.....okay.....but everthing Else ? Now its a normal GTB with some Races1995/1996 in its life. No wins. Alain Li had another 355 CH 1997/1998. With this Car he did good Rankings ! Nevertheless nice Car...........
That sounds to have full challenge spec except the brakes. It says he won class C champ in that car? "Li contested the European series with vigour as well as the UK-based 1995 Maranello Challenge Championship, in which he was the winner of Class C."
I d'ont know an UK based Maranello Series, May be the Same as the UK pirelli FOC Challenge Series at the Moment. In the 1995/1996 West European Challenge Series Alain Li raced with this Car, but not So good Places. He was more succesful in the Same Series later. No, I Think they have removed Most/nearly all of the Challenge Parts! But they have all the Parts, May be!
Look here: 1995 Ferrari F355 Challenge for sale by H & H No Race Switches, no Carbon door Panels........ I Think Seats, Steering Wheel and ch rims - Thats it.
Who cares about that stuff, it doesn't do much other than make it worse on the street and drop a few pounds and are easily swapped. The quick ratio steering rack, challenge shocks, anti roll bars, competition clutch etc. are more important. I'd be more interested in seeing if they have swapped that stuff out like they did the brakes.
I met Alain in hk .... Really super guy ... Had some good memories I can't figure the prices of these cars... I suspect we are in the post racing dip .. Where club racers uses them... Then they become collectors cars ...
Carbon door panels, lexan windows or race switches are not original spec for a F355 Challenge car. You could replace the door trims to save weight but there was no part provided by Ferrari to do this. Most of these cars had a post Challenge series racing career where other modifications where permitted and this is how many of the cars are today. The only extra switches is the battery cut out in the centre console.
Although its RHD and not a US spec car, as someone who is in the market for a street legal 95 US spec 355C, it will be interesting to see what this car auctions for. Even if US spec LHD it wouldn't be my dream car since it doesn't have some of the conversion mods that I want (ie. like the carbon door panels). The price is pretty much the absolute highest I have seen for ANY 355C. Wonder what it would cost for me to properly restore to as new condition a 95 355C beater car that has been raced extensively ? Probably the price of the car (and then some) !
Welcome to my world... Can someone confirm... Did the first 355ch come with lexan rear windows ... That car has one ... But not sure where it came from and it is a Ferrari part
It's a nice car with a good history ... One of the 18 rhd cars. Price wise I think we are stuck in the view nobody values these ... Looks like that's starting to change. The white rhd in similar shape sold this year at auction for about 65 ... So prices in the uk are on the march. Will be interesting to see what it does, I suspect in 10 years time we will all be wishing we paid that !!! Lol
No Lexan windows, not a Ferrari part, 355C glass is same as every other 355. FYI: The Challenge parts listing shows all the parts changed to make a 355C. You can browse it on the Ricambi website
Was 348 chal a lexan window? I have seen the rear window and as I remember it was a Ferrari logo part .... The reason I looked was because I was convinced they were all glass?
No you are wrong! The big challenge kit sold by ferrari years ago did not make a GTB to A real CH car. The first 1995 and 1996 were prepared by ferrari for a proper CH Car. These cars were delivered with lexan rear windows, gear box with an other ratio, stronger fittings for the dampers....a 1995/1996 CH completed with the delivered Smal CH kit is a factory challenge. The GTBs completed with the big CH kit are not real CH cars ( no 73 to 109 ). Its easy to check a real CH: lexan rear window , stronger suspension fittings..., .....and the CH cars had a battery switch at the middle console and all the racer Installed a switch for the oil coolers!
Carbon door panels were not challenge spec nor were they supplied in any conversion. If you saw a challenge car with carbon door panels they were custom made. They most definately were not from the factory as part of either a conversion kit or on any of the cars sold from the factory as a challenge car. It is nonsense then to say you wouldn't buy a challenge car without carbon panels because they didn't come with them. Sort of like saying you wouldn't buy a 288 GTO without a rear wing.
To the best of my knowledge, they were all glass. I had a factory 348 Challenge until I sold it a few months ago and rear window was glass. Lexan windows were not part of the Challenge "kit". I do know that it was, and I believe still is, possible to buy an aftermarket Lexan rear window. But I never heard of one with the Ferrari logo.
