I would like to know how important is to perform the 30,000 mile service on my Ferrari f355. The car is a 1997 spider and it runs like new it has 26,000 miles. I'm just afraid that if I take in for the 30k service other things will go wrong. Also what's the price for this service.

Fwiw..I would suggest following the prescribed service..

Find a qualified tech you can trust and move foward.

I'm sure you can find one .

I believe that to be the key for your concern.

My 2cts: look at the maintenance history of your car and determine what is applicable in the standard service plan. If you don't have it, try to gather it. Depending on what was done back at given time or mileage intervals, you may get milked for un-necessary operations.

I'm not sure what the 355 manual says, but the owners manual for my 348 says to change the belt at 52,500 miles. 30k miles is something the dealers say to get you to change the belts sooner. Don't believe the hype. They make big money off of service and parts. The 355's have two cam belts, one for each side. The 348's have one. A problem that has caused belt failure on the 348's is, the bearing in the water pump. What happens is the bearing goes bad causing it to freeze up. As a result of this the cam belt burns up till it breaks. But this is not the case for the 355's. The water pump does not run off of the cam belt. Thus it cannot break if the water pump goes out. If I was you, I wouldn't worry about it until the milage is closer to 50k. If the car is a garage queen, or you are trying to sell it, then get them changed. Other wise I would just follow what the service book say.

I feel as if there should be another answer for you - as a 355 owner...

1.) do a search on 30K service (doesn't matter which make - the information for all models apply to your question - there are many many many many many links with tons of info.

2.) The ridiculus statement - is not invalid... Why do you change the oil every 3000 or so miles? The car runs great at 10000 miles with the oil right? Of course the reason you change the oil is because of breakdown of the oil, fresh oil is a good preventative for undo wear and tear on the engine... The same goes for the 30K service.

3.) The reason you do the 30K service or after 5 years - is due to the hoses, belts, etc. take wear and tear over a certain amount of time/miles, fitting and clamps come loose, etc. The good news for your 355 is that you drive it - many people have proven all the hoses and belts work better and last longer when they are run - and not just sitting in a garage. I would be more worried if you said that your 355 had 2000 miles as a 1997 rather than nearly 30K - you run it - get the parts warmed up and juices flowing... Which is way better than dry rot of a garage queen.

4.) The statement that your car is running perfect - is probably correct - there is no reason for it not to be... And if it had the 15K services when it needed it and maybe even a belt change at the time - you are due for the 30K or 5 years. Not because it is running bad - but just because you are doing the preventative maintenance.

5.) Why do it? If you wait and you throw a belt - you will need to get a new 355 - becasue a broken cam belt will/could casue major damage (no matter what kind of car - this is not a good thing.). The other reason - which I think is a good or even better reason is: One day you will want to sell your car, upgrade to the 360 or 430 coming out... If you have a great maintenance trail with all records (even if you have none now - you can start with the 30K - which is the most important). Any buyer will see that you had the scheduled maintenance - and have more peace of mind that you took care of it. As you read some of the history posts - you will get my point on this.

The other good reason for doing the maintenance - which I tend to do every 4 years - and I only put 2 - 3K on my cars per year... Is if I am out with my wife or on a rally drive with my F-car friends - I want to have a little more peace of mind that I am not going to be on the side of the road with a potentially very expensive repair - due to lack of preventative maintenance.

As another side note - I would look (or post for opinions on this board) for a good independent F-car mechanic in your neck of the woods. I have used both dealer and independent in the past - and without question in my mind - independent is both way more cost effective and they do a better job (than most dealers)...

Here is a link of my 30K service and my car was running great (note the 15K was done by a dealer)....

    Hope that helps...
