I started to look into why my A/C only had room temp air today. It was checked and recharged about a year ago, but it never really blew cold after that.
I checked the flap and found that the flap control motor was bad. Not the arm...the motor. I disconnected it from the flap and switched it on with the A/C recirc button and it jerked, but the control arm didn't spin. I could also freely spin the arm with my fingers. New control motor ordered...
I then used vice grips to stop the flow of the hot water to the heater by clamping the hose just after the stepper motor per another post on this site. This did not change the temperature of the A/C. So I assumed the stepper motor was good.
I checked the hidden fuse under the bonnet and it was good.
I could hear the A/C compressor engage when I released the "STOP" button.
I decided to take it to Jiffy Lube to have the A/C recharged. The car should take about 1.75lbs of R134A. They recycled about 0.5lbs out of my system and ran the pressure down to -15 to prove there were no leaks. Then they pumped it up with 1.75lbs and Voila! A/C works!
Yes, I didn't use the authorized Italian version of R134A, but hey, now I can afford a nice bottle of Italian vino (or 3 or 4). :)
Also, thanks to Rifledriver (Brian) for letting me know how much Freon to put in when I called him on the phone today. He is a great guy and an awesome mechanic. My car will be visiting you soon for it's oil change Brian. And I owe you a bottle of wine. :)

I currently have a 355 here that was overcharged on the a/c by 1 full lb and also had 4 oz too much oil in it!

People are always concerned about overfilling other fluids, like oil, etc. but never consider the a/c system.
In the case of air conditioning, more isn't always better.
Lucky it didn't damage the compressor.
