My 95 F355 alternator just went out today. Is it a common bosh or something special? Can anyone give me a link to a reasonably priced new or rebuilt one? I've been looking around and it looks like $550 after core..

    Johnny -

Shouldn't you get the other issues sorted out first? They seem far more serious and likely to cause your engine to go "kablammo" in the near future.

You can send your unit here for a rebuild: http://www.romaineelectric.com

Also, rebuilding an alternator is a decent "first project" for the do-it-yourselfer who wants to better get to know his car (and save a few bucks in the process). Some alternator rebuild kits cost less than $50 for the parts.

Go to dogpile.com and do a search for instructions on the process.

Thanks for the advice jack, The car is in the shop now, but it helps to have a working alternator, so the car can be moved around easily until its engine is pulled and the 30K service is done and the valve guides are done.

Does anyone know the book time on the 30K service etc? To give my machanic an idea. He doesn't have access to this information on ferrari's And mine is the newest ferrari he's worked with... And thanks no doubt.

The alternator is a 140amp Nippondenso alternator. ND's p/n is 101211-7540. While working at a dealer, we never had any good luck with rebuilding these alternators. Since your car is an early model, I would strongly recommend you install an additional ground strap that goes from the alternator to the frame. Ferrari started doing this on late 355's (from Assy#32629 onward) and on all 360's. Apparently the engine ground strap can get dirty/greasy and the intermittent contact or poor connection gives the Japanese alternator's hell.

Perhaps Ferrari should go back to using Marelli alternators again. Since their performance was poor or intermittent, maybe this would synchronize the "charging" & "shorting" cycles?
