Just bought a used PS2 off ebay to play F355 Challenge. As I setup the PS2 I notice it didn't come with a power cable and no manual. So:

Can I just use any power cable to plug into the PS2 or does it use a power adaptor in between?

Also are there any benefits on getting additional memory cards or other things to play the game? Do I need a game shark? Sorry for the newbie questions, I'm a PC guy...
    :)

Any basic two port power plug from Radio Shack will work. Enjoy the game. I have it as well as Formula One 2001 on a 106" projection screen. My girlfriend gets car sick when I play formula one because it gives her motion sickness!!!

Sounds similar to my PC setup.

Thanks guys for the tips, will do. Just didn't want to fry the PS2 as first order of biz.

Now I realized that I'm also missing the video cable. Argh.

There should be a manual online somewhere. Do a google. Yes, i highly reconmend extra memory cards. I only have 1 right now and i need another one. I'm deleting stuff off it all the time to free up space. As soon as i get the new gran turismo i'll need a new one anyway.

Game sharks are annoying to use and made for people who are to lazy to beat the game on their own :D

Enjoy the game, its really fun

Oh, are the memory cards to store my game progress and settings? Kinda like the disk drive in the XBox. If that's the case I see why I'd need some.

    Steering wheel is a given.

Games I'm planning on playing on PS2 are:
    - F355 Challenge
    - 24 Hours with the Lancia-Ferrari
    - GT4 (was fun to see its product placement on "The Apprentice" last night)

Yes, you need a memory card for that stuff. No memory card = No progress saved, meaning, you'll have to start the game from scratch every time.

Oh I see. So in other words, if I preserve the memory card I could take my settings to any PS2 in the country? Neato.

Well, yes but the point is that without a memory card, you can't save progress. Like, on Gran Tourismo, you can get money by winning races and buy cars with that money. Without a memory card, these cars and money and race wins will be lost. Yes, It is the equivalent to the disk drive on the xbox.

Get the newer Driving Force wheel- it's much better than the older model, which would itself be a massive improvement over the hand held controllers.

Also, if you have a TV with a component video input, get the component video outputs cables for your PS2. It makes a world of difference.

And remember that F355 challenge is a very old game, so don't expect state of the art graphics, sound, or gameplay- the physics models are '90s-ish. Sony's Gran Turismo series (3&4) is far superior, but unfortunately Ferrari is a little pigheaded about their licensing so there are no Ferraris in that series. However, the other 700 cars in GT4 are pretty amusing.

BTW the PS1/PS2 power cables are the same so if you can find one cheaper go for it.

Ok, just back from a trip to Compusa:

Power cable and video cable issues are resolved.
Also got the Force feedback wheel from Logitech. Looks pretty good. Was wondering, whether I shouldn't have gone for the Thrustmaster Enzo wheel, but that had no force feedback. However it offered PC support.

I guess in a perfect world the wheels have force feedback and work for PC and PS2.

I think GT4 has the Stratos in it. At least that car has a Ferrari engine, tataa!

I wouldnt buy a game shark. Cheating is for bums. If I can beat Grand Theft Auto San Andreas with out cheats, you guys can beat any game with out cheats.

As for memory cards. depends how hard core gamer you have inside you. If your only an ocasional gamer, one memory card should do you good. If you plan to have a stack of games like me. Get two cards, if you dont want to delete other data.

The Logitech force feedback wheel is fantastic. Especially after I put a Ferrari sticker smack center on it...
    :)

You're right F355 Challenge is not quite cutting edge anymore. The force feedback effects are there, although very soft.

24 hours of Le Mans was very disappointing: No support for the steering wheel. The game itself is ok, but what's the point if you have to "drive" it through that silly controller?

GT4 ought to be good: There was even a label on it on the box the wheel came in. 900 degrees of wheel control, awesome!

I bought a PS2 a couple weeks ago specifically for Gran Turismo 4. Also bought the Logitec Drive Force Pro.

Of course, I needed my Ferrari Fix and since there are no Ferraris in GT4, I picked up a copy of F355 Challenge.

Using the DFP, The brake pedal works ass-backward!!!!!!

Depress the brake pedal, and you can drive. Release, and the game thinks you're giving full-brake input.

I tried to calibrate, but when it comes time to calbirate the brake pedal, the "status" bar is already completely red indicating brake pedal input.

    Any ideas?

BTW, the opening sequence w/ the 355 Challenge car tearing out of the gates at Maranello brought a tear to my eye. :)

I assume you have the force feedback 900 degrees steering wheel from Logitech specifically made for PS/2? I have the same setup and play GT4 and F355 Challenge just fine. Actually F355 Challenge does a handshake on bootup with the wheel and rotates it. You only get the left LED as it does not support 900 degrees but otherwise all works just the way it should.

GT4 does have one Ferrari: The Lancia Stratos. I bought it and upgraded it to over 300hp, but it still is a struggle against current Alfas. Oh well. That's where the Pagani at 900+ hp comes in...I need to time myself on the Ring with the Pagani. Should get me a decent time.

Well, at least there's hope! Yes, I have the 900 degree Logitec DFP wheel, and like you said, it boots up with just the left LED.

    Maybe it's user error... :)
