I have a 1995 F355 and I seem to have a problem with the charging system. The battery light would flicker and turn on and off only after driving for about 45 minutes. If I turn off the car and restart it after say ten minutes the light would go off and then it would do the same thing after driving it again. I have replaced the battery and the alternator and it still does it. Does the car have a separate Rectifier or is it part of the alternator? I'm hoping that the rectifier is separate and that it's bad. If not, I'm lost! Thanks guys!
The voltage regulator, rectifier are all contained in the alternator. 355's in general and 95's specifically have connectivity problems in their charging system, those are the most common charging problems and throwing parts at the car generally will not fix them. Some specific diagnostic work is required.
First question - does your alternator have a separate ground strap? Every 355 should have one. ~$10 from the dealer, a few minutes to install. Without the strap, the alternator's ground becomes intermittant, and causes various charging problems. Very, very annoying.... vty, --Dennis
Thanks for your help guys! Checked the alternator.. There is a separate ground lead that goes from the alternator to the frame. I'm going to do a full dianostic tommorow to find the source of the problem. I will let you know the results!
Hello there I own since 2000 a giallo fly F355, chassis 100042, I recently repalced the alternator, but still the charging light is flickering as follows first 3-7 km everything ok, no red light then for the next 150 -250 km, flickering below 4000 revs later on : no more red light When engine is cut and restarte 1 out of 2 the charging light stays off I do not know yet whether I have an extra ground strap Could fitting this alone cure my problem ?
I had my '96 355 alternator rebuilt twice and it checked out on the bench perfectly. However I continued to have the same 'flickering' problem. Ultimately had to buy a new alternator ... ~ $1200. Pete
aspecially if you connect the tom tom navigation on it haha anyway it drives great and it looks fantastic!
Friend of mine had similar problems with the Nippondenso alternator on his 348 spider...kept removing and testing it, always tested fine....but finally he removed it, and had them test it on the bench for 15 minutes or so...BINGO! The voltage would drop...it was heat related...worked fine cold, once it got hot, then the voltage dropped. They replaced the voltage regulator or something, and it has worked perfectly since. But as others have mentioned, make sure the connections (plug) are clean and tight, and the ground strap is present.
