I think the max you can set if for is 14,400 rpm . . . the distributors end up dividing this by 4 (about 3800 rpm was where it cut off) . . . although I think if you put it in waste fire mode it might double this, but then I wasn't sure what the implications of that were with the distributors . . . when I bought a Haltech igniter to plug in instead of the DIS 4, I didn't have the revving problem . . . it could have been something else though. So Jeff in essense what you are saying is you tore apart a couple of GSXR or CBR 954 wiring sets for the COP's and hooked them up via your diagram correct? I got a good part of the harness laid down with wire just need to get the connectors to the COPs which is what I have been kicking back and forth on which one is the right one.
Check ebay... you DON"T need the entire harness for the connectors, only the plug SUB harness. The ones I got were sold seperately for around $20 (4 connectors). So I had to get 2 to make my harness up for the 355. Basically you are throwing mony away if you buy a complete harness for the motorcycle. Also, any Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki connectors will work (providing that that model use the coil-on-plugs) as the COPS are all made by Denso and share a common part. JD
Jeff - Thanks for the tips. I figured it was just the connectors and was just looking for the actual coil pack harness. Where I was confused was if there were different models for for the connectors to the denso COPs but you cleared that up. I got most of the wiring laid out and just need to get the connectors and COPs and then I should have a nice winter project getting this all running. Thanks for all the help.
Jeff By any chance do you have the part number for the bosch plug that goes to the coil harness . I called motec but they need some kind of part number . Thanks Bill
I have all my old reciepts buried, but here's a link to their online current catalog. Page 64 ha the Bosch connectors. Check them against the number of contacts that the Ferrari has, then give them a call back http://www.motec.com/catalog.htm JD
Hi Jeff What cops did you use , I found by accident that there ar two types for the gsxr , one is a half inch shorter than the other . The denso part numbers are 129700-4400 for the long one and 129700-3440 for the short one . It aperrs thet the short on will fit without using a spacer . Not totaly sure because I havent got my spark plugs yet . I was also curious as to where you hooked up the switched 12 volt line for the dis 4 , I was thinking of just taking it from the 12v positive going to the old ignition coil . Thanks again . Bill
could you please post the dimensions of both? I purchased PN 129700-4510 and they are about 1/2" too short to work on my F40. I should be able to use the same COP as a 328 QV. Thanks!
You WILL need a spacer once you put a connector on the COP. Switched 12v comes from the old coil pack. JD
Short one is 5.00" which is good for the 348 / 355 Long one is 5.60" which is good for the 308QV / 328QV JD Image Unavailable, Please Login
That would be great. Eliminating the spacer would save some moola (around $150) for the machined part. Also it would eliminate the need for a second set of gaskets for the covers. It would be an invisible retro-fit that you could almost sneek through a concours ;^P JD
Mine measure 5.0 inches. I'm going to need the longer one. Just to clarify, what would be the correct part number and application? Anyone got a hook-up with Denso? We should be able to get the proper new connectors from Denso. I'm going to check around to see if I can modify the 308/328 plug extender grommets to accept the COP. I need the set-up to be water proof and vibration resistant. Thanks for the help. Is Electromotive still in business? Maybe they can help with the connectors. Does a 308/328 use a plug extender where the wire enters at 180 degrees or are they all 90 degrees?
Crap I have a set of the 5.6 inch COPs coming for my 348. I thought they would fit as measuring the current setup of plugwires I came away with a 5.5inch length. I will report more back when the set arrives on if they are to long. mrknowitallf40 if mine are to long for my 348 you want to swap the sets? My long ones for your short ones?
I was able to find a source for the plugs for the cops , Greg over at motec has located them . Not sure of the price yet . Bill
I was just at FOA this afternoon. I needed the plastic cover that goes over the battery terminal at the rear on a 355... not related at all... But I was in the back taking with Mark the service manager...There was an F40 doing a major and Mark told me the price of a set of 8 spark plug wires. I still have a silly giggle just thinking about the price he said that FNA wanted for the set.....Heck, you can have 5+ complete MSD DIS4 systems! Wise move my friend, $3K for a set of plug wires IS just this side of totally insane. Even if I were in the social stratus that could afford the car, the price would still make me giggle. Performance wise you won't be sorry for doing this mod, just save your old parts if the next owner wants "all original" parts. JD
I would love to trade. Problem is that I only have 4. I have been following this thread since I started thinking about doing this 2 years ago. Since I cannot find a catalog with technical information, I just decided to buy different ones and try them. There has to be a way to contact Denso ang get some tech help. I think I'm gonna try. I would also be happy to buy the ones that you have or pay you the difference. Let me know.
Dont worry I have 4 as well. As soon as I get them here (hopefully tomorrow) I will see if they fit my car and if not am happy to make a trade with you. I'll be in touch.
I don't think it matters as long as all are the same. All the MSD is doing is providing a ground. BUT, that being said, I am not an ignition engineer so can't speak with absolute authority. Knowing this, I just followed what was done on the motor cycle sub-harness as all the wires were color coded for each plug and all had a common black/white stripe which I assumed to be - (negative).
