These cars need a signal to drive the car's tachometer. On the 2.7, this is a brown black wire from the Left Bank ECU (pin 6). I'm pretty sure the brown black wire (pin 80) on the 5.2 is also used for this function. There's a 5.2 Motronic diagram in German floating around on the internet showing pin 80 as a "Drehzahlmesser/Bordcomputer". Google translate says "drehzahlmesser" means tachometer. Still trying to figure out the SN (pink black) on pin 42. The wire appears to end up at "Dashboard Connector 41024" pin 2 (on the 5.2 cars). This connector feeds things like the warning lights on the instrument panel and the"anti-theft"/immobiliser ECU.
Thank you very much for providing this detailed work, this will be very helpful to me in resolving a wiring issue that I have on my 355 spider that I'm restoring. It is so nice when someone takes so much trouble to produce something for so many to use. Regards Simon
Thanks NoSpeedLimit Well, curiosity got the better of me, and I started checking the wiring attached to the instrument binnacle this week. There is no pink black wire going to the instruments (except for the low petrol light), so I'm hoping the pink black from the ECU goes to alarm system. Unfortunately, I won't be checking that soon (I hear the cover for the alarm ECU is rivetted on). I might try to use a wire tracer to see which general direction it goes in. When I was checking the Slow Down and Check Engine light circuitry in the binnacle, I found something I couldn't explain. There are independent wires going from the Engine ECU to the binnacle for the Slow Down and Check Engine lights. However, no matter what wire combinations I tried, I couldn't get the Slow Down and CE wires to illuminate independently (they both came on at the same time) and I could not get either lights to illuminate when I put power on the plug pin which corresponded to the Check Engine light. Surely, if there are independent wires for Slow Down and Check Engine, they should be able to illuminate independently? I'm wondering if I have a fault... or one of the previous owners messed around with the binnacle wiring to get both lights to illuminate during start up, but not show actual faults (which could be catastrophic). I also found a black wire on Dashboard Connector "41024" pin 1 that I have no explanation for. In the 1994 WSM diagrams there used to be a black and white wire for the Left Hand Bank Check Engine Light. I'll continue checking... Cheers Ian.
Cool ) By the way, I'm confused as to where the "Rear Connector" is (Plug "41091") . I'm not referring to the plug on the Engine ECU, but the one between the ECU and the forward console area connector (41024). Here's my latest diagram... lots still to be confirmed and added 5.2 Injection System (from rear connector to instruments)
Well, I removed my binnacle completely to get better access to the wiring and I confirmed that a previous owner had carried out a dodgy modification on my car and I'm mighty p*ssed. I found an additional wire going from one of the connector pins to the Check Engine light and a piece of black tape under one of the lamp contacts. In effect, this made the Check Engine and Slow Down lights come on with the ignition key in Accessory, but would not have illuminated any of these lights if a fault occurred with the engine or exhaust with the engine running. In fact, when I put the binnacle back on, I'm almost expecting the lights to illuminate. Anyway, on the up side, with the binnacle out, I was able to check the wiring connections properly. Version 2 of my diagram has been uploaded: Version 2
Here's a photo of what you hope not to find after an expensive PPI... Dodgy modification A wire going from pin 2 of the lower right connector to one contact on the Check Engine lamp holder... and a piece of electrical tape under the other contact. Ahh, ignorance is bliss...
I had a look at the wiring harnesses going to my immobiliser (and several others in that area) and none were pink/black. I expected the fuel pump wire to go there, too (as on the 2.7), but there were no green/yellow wires, either. I saw one splice close to the immobiliser which had a different coloured wire on either side of the splice. I suppose that's possible for any of the wires. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to use my wire tracer. Cheers Ian.
I did trace the pink black wire from ECU pin 42 to the connector (right next to the ECU connector on the wiring harness) going to pin 11. It looks like that connector goes toward the front of the car. I have to trace that further for a 5.2 car.
Mitchell, I'm sure that pink black wire ends up at plug "41024" at the front of the centre console (upper white plug, pin 2*). There's a pink black wire there that wasn't on the 2.7 car. I tried to use a wire tracker on that wire, but the harness is out of reach (forward of that plug). I ran the wire tracker over the wiring at the rear of the passenger fuse panel and in the immobiliser area, but I didn't pick up a signal. *Pin 2 is towards the bottom right hand corner on left hand drive cars (top left on right hand drive cars) In the near future, I may take a run down to my local Ferrari guy and see if he has any diagrams for the 5.2. This mystery is driving me nuts I couldn't find the power source for the CEL and SDL warning lights, either. Cheers
For info.... I buzzed out the ZN wire from the engine ECU to connector 41024. It's a direct circuit (I pulled all the plugs off the alarm system). From connector 41024 I checked the resistance to earth. It was about 48 ohms (also with the alarm plugs off). My local Ferrari guy doesn't have diagrams for the 5.2, so we're still in the dark. Cheers
Mitchell, Your pin out doesn't match with my official Ferrari 1997 (USA) Spider wiring diagram. I'm curious where you got the info? Seems to be one pin off in certain places. Maybe trnscribed in error? Specifically I'm trying to match ECU pin numbers to the O2 sensors to confirm they are hooked up properly. As an example look at pin 21 in photo. It's not connected to anything ie N/C. But in the pinout it shows it going to cam phase sensor pin 2. Which on mine it shows it on ECU pin 20. Off by one.
Interesting... Some time ago, I found a diagram which looked just like yours, Michael (possibly on this forum) except it does have pin 21 (which goes to the cam phase sensor). That diagram also matched the pre-production Bosch diagram which was also posted here (can't find it now, but it's on disk). However, the Bosch diagram had no colours (and the German on it required some translation. Note that both 20 and 21 pins are used on the Bosch diagram (for the cam phase and crankshaft sensor). Also, pin 13 is unused (unlike your diagram) I re-drew the official-Ferrari-looking diagram and added colour and notes. It was then that I noticed that a couple of the wires had different colour codes at opposite ends of the wires. I'm wondering if yours is the same (or if in '97, Ferrari corrected the diagrams). I lost the original version. Here's the latest version of my diagram which I recently amended (based on the two diagrams I had and user feedback). 5.2 Wiring Diagram (in progress) I would send you the Bosch pdf diagram for comparison, but I suspect the notes/translations I added to it will disappear when it leaves my computer.
Michael There are known errors on the Ferrari diagram around the o2 sensors. My battle-tested ECU pin out is correct.
Mitchell's pinout appears to be identical to the pre-production Bosch 5.2 ECU diagram. Note that some of the obscure names in that list have now been identified. e.g. "Row 3 73 Purple Temperature AGK" is actually the US/CAN/AUS exhaust bypass TCU. Here's a corrected diagram to match the Bosch diagram (I had some left/right bank stuff swapped over) 5.2 ECU Corrected Diagram
More a slightly flawed reproduction than a masterpiece Hope we can resolve the ambiguities and solve the mystery of the pink/black wire
Michael, would you have a wiring diagram for the 5.2 fuel pump and car/engine interfaces? I tried to piece together a 5.2 diagram based roughly on the 2.7 system, other diagrams and lots of wiring checks, but there are still a few unknowns. 5.2 Starter/Alternator/Fuel Pump/Engine Ancillary&Sensor Power
Here's one for a 5.2 gated car: https://www.dropbox.com/t/e9m2mleFk4ckxZ1E Normally used in conjunction with this one: https://www.dropbox.com/t/e9m2mleFk4ckxZ1E It shows how the ECU/ignition system interfaces with the rest of the car. Problems or just curious?
