    Hi,

Anyone know which fuse on a 5.2 Motronic 355 controls the engine fan? I've not heard the engine fans all day and it's been hella hot here in New York. In fact, at one point, the over temperatur light came on and there was no sign of a working fan. I'm thinking I've got a bad fuse or a busted thermostat or something.

    Anyone know anything about this?

    Thanks!!

Left and right fans are controlled by seperate fuses, both located in the passengers footwell. In many cases one fan has not worked for a while and when the other quits the car overheats. On less than very hot days one will keep the car from overheating. The panel when you fold it down should guide you to the correct fuses.
PS. The owners man. has the diagram of the fuse locations in it.

    Thanks.

If the fuses are in good shape and the fans are still not turning on, do you think it could be a faulty thermostat? Is there a way to manually activate the fans?

It could be a thermostat. My first suggestion is to not drive the car until it is fixed. Heat is about the most destructive thing to your motor. Taking into consideration the types of questions you have posed, the potential down sides to not getting it properly fixed, as well as the tools and knowledge required to diagnose it, I strongly suggest you take it to a shop experienced with 355's and have it repaired.

Thanks for the advice -- I've found a temporary work around:

If you run the A/C, the fans (at least one) comes on automatically. With the compressor running and the A/C fan on the first "click" the car stays nice and cool at a dead stand still.

I'll be bringing it to my shop (who also suggested turning on the A/C and listening for the fan) as soon as I get a free second...

Thanks for the advice, I do appreciate it!

Exactly what I was going to suggest. The A/C switch will run the fan to get you where you need to go.

Prob the temp switch on top of the fan. Common wear out item...looking at about $120 to replace.
