Not to mention the under carriage. Granted, I own a spider and would not expect to get anything near what that car sold for, but other than that there isn't a cosmetic or mechanical aspect of my car which isn't better. And then there were things about that car than made me wonder, like this: Image Unavailable, Please Login

Someone obviously hit the pumpkin with a rattle can as evidenced by the studs and nuts being painted. Makes me wonder if whoever bought the car actually knows what they were bidding on.

For I second I read this as “It’s a record setting car because it isn’t a record sitting car.” Haha

At this I think with the recent two sales on BaT, the crowds on BaT isn't so "anti-Ferrari" anymore. In the past, this car would be happy to get around 80K. Now, we just need to get a few more good auctions!!!

i spend more time in the oil cooled porsche world that has been struggling to deal with how to contextualize BaT prices. What used to happen is when a car set a high price point, it would freeze the market while all other sellers would act like it was the new bar. But when no buyers would show up at that price, the market would go back to normal. Its gotten to the point that people almost disregard the prices cars sell for on BaT. Seems so many of these cars are not represented as completely as they could be. I'd never buy a BaT car without a PPI.

To be fair, you should *never* buy anything semi-exotic on up without a PPI. And the BaT crowd has some *extremely* competent subject matter experts on almost any car you can think of. Take a look at the old racing Alfa Romeo up now.. Decades of documentation, and there are *still* things brought to light by the peanut gallery that weren't in the paperwork.

It's to the point where I would almost trust the BaT peanut gallery to pick a car apart as much as I trust a mechanic I don't know to do a PPI, to be frank.

There is a good starting point in my348.com. I actually used that and then generic Ferrari ppi checklists you can download. Most of it is check this, check that, ensure x functions, ensure y does not do z, leaky shock's, grooved brakes, engine oil leaks etc. despite all that seems no one ever catches the steering rack bushings are shot.. I'd do my own and sub out compression/leak down. If thats good and knterios is in great shape then everything else is almost trivial to address on a 348 at least.

I agree and think that statement is right. Would also say I've had a few hundred cars, many bought out of state and never had a PPI.

Partly because, if from photos you can tell you've stumbled across a particularly well cared for specimen, by the time you arranged for/received results of a PPI, it will probably be sold to someone else already.

Oh, I'm a prime example of hypocrisy in action. Bought my 348 Spider entirely based on photos of the stunning exterior, some service records, and a couple requested videos of the undercarriage. Totally lucked out, as she only needed an AC recharge and there's a dead glove box door strut (lol). Had her gone over by Bruce at Maranello Autosports and the verdict was, "Your new name is Mr. Vegas because you rolled the dice and got a very good car."

Very much agreed on the necessity of speed, though. The dealership had just dropped the price to something that in six months is going to seem ludicrously cheap, and I don't know a trustworthy Ferrari technician in the SF Bay area, much less one who I could talk into running out there immediately to look her over. Could have been a lot worse. Just a week before I found my car, I had literally napped through the end of a BaT auction on a Mondial I was really interested in. It presented well, but turned out to be nothing but problems.

Mine went for well over that price last week. It was a very well sorted car though. I do think they are starting to tick up. Average price is now more $100k from what I'm seeing.

Do you guys want them to appreciate or not? Becasue this is how it happens. Embrace that people are paying more and more. Don't say "OH, that's such an absurd price for that pile of junk."

I'll just leave this here as a reminder of what's to come.

It's not the price, everyone is for that. It's the seeming sudden jump at least on bat. Remains to be seen if it's a bat thing or an actual 355 thing.

To me it’s mostly a BAT thing; same thing for Testarossa, they are up but not as up as BAT it’s like 5-10% up everywhere and 20% on BAT for average to good examples

I'd be willing to bet the buyer of that GTS doesn't go through with the deal.

I’m not sure there are many first time buyer on BAT like this. If he doesn’t it will cost him 5k. I doubt it though.

I'm sure you could do a charge back on your credit card.

I'm all for 355 values shooting up...this one just doesn't make much sense.

I doubt you'd succeed on a chargeback after they appeal and show the T&C where you agreed to waive rights by signing up for an account and bidding. And it's not like this guy came along solo and said, "Sure, here's $155K!" There were two bidders in the last ten thousand, and more up to $145K i think?

It takes at least two to tango, as it were.

I just checked though...is it me or did all the Berlinettas and GTS' disappear?

You Spider guys would always clap back saying it's just as desirable (if not more!) but the market has spoken. There's literally almost entirely only Spiders available in the US and Canada.
