this shld have gone for $60k, wonder what happened: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1993-ferrari-348-serie-speciale-3/
Yes, the giallo car immediately came to mind. And the silver GTB that made you "lose faith in humanity" which was clearly a nicer car even without the targa roof. I'm sure you'd debate "comparable" so I'm guessing it is a moot point unless I can cite a rosso/tan GTS w/i 500 miles.
You said open market. Silver GTB is gone. Perhaps these buyers wanted a red GTS? Yellow GTS is roughly the same price and was just recently posted.
I am speaking of the Spadyautogroup listing from post 11375. Photos are taken outside, and clearly not rosso corsa
An FChatter friend and I were texting each other in disbelief during the auction. The days of a $60k 348SS are gone - at least for now. But once it passed ~$90k, we were both left scratching our heads. There were two bidders dueling it out in a case of more bucks than brains, at least IMHO. It's a nice car, but $193k w/buyer's premium for a 348SS?! Wtf? While it had the cf-kevlar seats (though the driver's side seat is damaged . . . and expensive to repair properly), those seats are ~$10-$12.5k if sourced separately.
3 years ago means more now than it probably ever did. I also bought my 96 911 C4S for 68k 3 years ago. Agree with John though, would rather have the FGT myself
What I’ve learned from the vid, Niki Lauda had a part in the development and testing of the suspension and handling characteristics of the F355 in the early stages. Perhaps similar to Senna’s involvement in the NSX. That’s pretty cool. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Truly gold, thanks for posting it here Ken. Had never seen it. Listening to Paul Frere describe the car and advancements is special. I enjoyed seeing the factory back then and appreciate that lost “era”. Also interesting to see, the link between the 355 and the “new” cars ie 360 and onwards.
It's more interesting if you look at it from a historical perspective and what we know to be true today. Ferrari was struggling financially. The 348 wasn't cutting it. Ferrari was being outdone by competitors. So Paul Frere's comment at the end, "It's not enough to sell a car simply because it is a Ferrari. The car must also be outstanding. I think Ferrari has achieved that with the F355." The rest is history. The F355 saved Ferrari.
Circa 1994 launch and test drives. I am waiting for an old magazine to arrive, which hopefully will help pinpoint the date of the first launch. It is mistaken to have taken place in Geneva, but that seems to incorrect. First pic I'm 99% sure that's the current Museo Ferrari in Maranello. Back in the days they used that room (where now the F1 cars are on display) to unveil new cars to the media - even the F40 has been launched in that room. Image Unavailable, Please Login I've seen a YouTube video with the F355s in that room but I can't find it anymore, spent hours but it's lost somewhere in the platform.
