    96-97 had the second

    It really does matter if you compare first gen 2.7 muffler with last gen 5.2 muffler.

    Stock 2.7 muffler is a low bar though. Perhaps the better question is…. What isn’t better than the stock 2.7 muffler?

    Hopefully, someone isn’t choosing a 5.2 based on the sound of a stock 2.7 muffler.

    I would agree, I have never heard a significant difference between years, or even between the 2.7 versus 5.2. Throughout the 5.2 from 96 to 99, the only significant change the to exhaust was late 98 or early 99 have metal catalysts. All the cars earlier had the ceramic ones, which were prone to failure, as the ceramic cores were not securely fastened to the stainless steel housings. They would work loose and then crumble. But never discerned a difference in tone or volume.
