F355 modifications to allow Engine-IN servicing? Is this conceivable? Has this ever been done? Forget about affecting the value of the vehicle for a second. I'm curious to know if this is even physically possible or practical.
You mean like drill out a big hole in the firewall? Lol. I remember someone actually did that many years back. Was a good laugh for Fchat .
The drop in value of the car itself would be enough to pay for 3-4 engine out services...which if you follow European market guidelines I believe that's every 5 years and 15-20 years of ownership. Not to mention the possible reduction in structural rigidity of the car. Can it be done? Yes. Should you? No. Unless it's a clapped out example that's been in multiple accidents all over and put together with glue already...then go for it.
There is a garage around here that does engine in servicing. They drop the fuel tank then do the belt job from the pocket that it creates. Hard to check if there are issues with the job or address any other issues with the vehicle like that. It's possible, not recommended.
I can't remember who off the top of my head, but I do recall the pictures. I remember Paul Chua giving him a pretty hard time. You'll have to search for it amongst the hundreds of belt change threads. This had to be at least 8 years ago.
anything is possible, some have done it all ready, most will say it’s not worth it for many reasons. A search should find what your looking for
I remember that photo of the added hole. It showed a large hole through the subframe directly in front of the crankshaft pulley. Yeah, not recommended.
it was a darker red car (Rosso Monza?). it was up for sale when i was looking to buy (almost 3 years ago now!) Everyone thinks pulling an engine is difficult....it's really not. sjd
I agree with this. It really is not hard at all, provided you have access to a lift. And it's actually satisfying to do it yourself.
because.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................i'm curious
Yes it is possible, but it would be like going to a proctologist to have your tonsils removed. The car was designed to have engine out and there are many benefits of that system when maintaining the car properly. Every 5 years it provides a thorough inspection on issues on a cat that is at least 21 years old.
Fuel cell in the front compartment Revalve the suspension and you gotz a better driver Plenty room to work but I still drop it out as its SOOOOOOOOOoooo much easier to work on that way
disagree. I did the 348 without a lift. It's optimal with 3 jacks and a trolley for the engine to ride down on. Once the engine is down, up goes the car (pivot on the front wheels), and out comes the engine. That being said. I'll do the next one with a lift. It'll save about 3-4 hours of work. sjd
And don't forget that a "major" by definition isn't just swapping belts, but completely going over everything resealing and painting etc. Which brings me to a question; what do 360 folks do? Those cars have the service panel, I watched the ratarossa video and looks like a lock and swap "per WSM". Does a "major" include engine out? Just curious...
They don't take the engine out. Which means the cam timing on a 360 (especially a Spider) is a really ***** of a job.
