This is correct and because the failure lamp stays lit it puts dashes on the display

Did you also check the f1 relay Behind the drivers seat for us USA models
    Maybe that relay is shorted

With everything connected and assume the car is fully fitted and everything is in its place, I turn on the ignition and get the 3 or 4 buzzer beeps from the buzzer beside the fuse box, the display during this time lights up all pixels and when the buzzer stops the 2 dashes are displayed on the display along with the F1 gearbox warning light on. The low friction and auto gearbox warning lights come up initially and turn off (like almost all cars where the lights come up with ignition on and then turn off). The red fault light never flashes. It turns on with ignition and remains on.

Not sure if I understand your question but the F1 display lights all the time and it dims when you put on the headlights but not the park lights
It can also be adjusted for brightness with the other dash lights

No problem. Mr.eric has done the same test and measured what was needed. He was getting the same values I did.

This isnt a USA or GB model. It's a europe model. and also yes I have checked all 3 relays that sit beside the TCU.

I hope I am not giving you bad information as I have not started my car for a few months
One of those lights flash while the pump is running at the back of the car to pressure up the system
Once it’s pressurized the light stops flashing and shuts off unless there is a fault.
Normally until the system pressures up it does not light the display.
If there is an error it sees right away this could be causing the red light to stay lit up and not flash but normally that is not the case

Yes and the reason its staying lit is because it has a display control error stating short circuit to VBAT which is happening on pin 5. But we have come closer to a better answer on this thread that the 10v on that pin5 of the display unit is normal and the TCU is the real devil that isn't pulsing the voltage on that pin for some reason and that is why it is throwing an error stating short circuit. Its basically stabbing itself in its own leg and then crying out for help.

Honestly I don't know about it flashing when you initially turn it on because i have had this fault for so long I dont even remember if it does that but I'm sure you're right. Either way right now it stays on becuase of the short circuit to VBAT error.

I might be wrong but I thought there were two plugs the same by either the tcu or main ecu on the other side of the car. Could those two plugs gotten mixed up?

also did you perform an engine out lately and the transmission has not worked since because there is a plug at the back for the f1 by the pump
It can easily get hit when you drop the motor and damage a pin

The system does loose it’s pressure after a day or so and not that it would help us that much but next day when you turn on ignition you could check
This would just tell us that the error is instantly picked up so it would likely not be the shifters or any other mechanical system because for the computer to know it’s a mechanical component the system needs pressure I think

I was reading through that thread and found this. Since this is the case maybe my software is faulty somehow and that is why the TCU isnt communicating?

Do your brake lights work as this eliminates another mechanical component

No I have not done an engine out recently. After my previous engine out the car ran fine. The car had been sitting for well over a year after which this problem has started.

Do you have an obd2 plugged in as the system can communicate through that and maybe it’s causing a permanent power.
Just unplug it and see if that makes a difference
I am not nearly as good with the wiring diagrams as Ian or Mitchell but I do understand the system
    Reasonably well after 20 years

I don't think the 97' came with and OBD socket. If you mean the individual sockets for various control modules then I have checked with them unplugged as well.

The obd socket is under the steering wheel and dash
You plug in an obd reader to see engine issues like emissions, fuel, cat converter function and others

No thats not the case with this. I think OBD only came out with the 99 model I'm not sure. It is definitely not there in my car because I have pulled out the dashboard and havent found anything

OBD ports are only on USA cars. Even Australian cars with identical engine management components don't come with OBD2 ports.

I imagine RHD Indian cars are the same as Australian cars.

Yes they are. I didn't know that only US models came with this. Also have a look at post #114. I quoted wolfgang from the other thread. Might be helpful. Thank you.

Would be so helpful if I could get another TCU to just check this and verify if that's the problem before purchasing a new or used one. New ones are going for about 12k£.
