Thank you everyone who has helped me to all my questions so far. I'm still exploring whether or not the shop I had my oil change at overfilled or not. Today I checked the reading at idle when eng and oil temp are were reading in the middle (fully warm) before driving, reading at idle after a 30 min drive, and 30 sec after shutoff after the 30 min drive.

The picture posted is of the 30 sec AFTER shutoff. The other readings show the oil at the same place, however also with oil at the top of the max line. There appears to be a gap from where it stops in the picture with possibly small traces of oil all the way up to where the max line is but only when it's running. Is it possible that oil splashes up that far while running? What is the reading I should be using?

(Note the blue arrow is where I see oil concentrated when running only)

Oil level is to be checked hot, within 30 seconds of engine off.

Can the dipstick show a difference when running and oil is -moving- in the tank? Yes, which is why it's checked engine off.

The crankshaft and connecting rods do cause the oil to splash around in the oil pan. It's called windage; and it reduces HP. Hot rodders often use a custom oil pan with windage plates to keep the oil from splashing around so much. The cable program, Engine Masters, did a show on this problem.

355 are a dry sump lubrication system so the oil level dipstick is in the oil tank (not the crankcase), but oil coming back into the oil tank from the low pressure scavenging pump will cause the top surface of the oil volume in the tank to oscillate/vibrate around which gives a higher than actual reading if the engine is running (if oil isn't just directly splashing onto the dipstick, too) = engine (and the oil flow) needs to be stopped to give a meaningful dipsick reading, and it needs to be done fairly quickly after engine shutoff as oil can flow back down out of the oil tank thru the clearances in the oil pump(s) into the crankcase when the engine is not running.

I would follow the instructions printed in the owners manual.
