This issue is on a 95 F355. Has anyone played with this problem before? Feedback/Advice?

Shown in the picture below, there is a small differential oil leak coming from between the "RH Lateral Cover" (#1) and "RH Intermediate Plate." (#12) (Leak area shown in blue) There does not appear to be any kind of gasket between the cover and the plate (the area indicated in red). It is not physically visible, nor shown in the parts manual. I assume a liquid gasket/sealant would need to be applied. Is this correct?

Any suggestions on best sealant to use? Benz makes a great liquid gasket for use as an oil seal (black in color and very thick) that we have used before, I was thinking it might work great for this application.

Task not yet started, just doing my prepwork.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

yes its a liquid sealing needed. I use something called Dirko HT or Würth Engine Sealing i dont know if such brands are available in your country. Should be heat and oil resistant and also should be remain flexible not the kind of hard sealings like hylomar that always leak after some time.

Stupid but did you tried to check all bolts if one is loose maybe it helps already, not a big chance but worth a try.

But anyway you are lucky that the leak is between the end cover and the middle section otherwise it would be a pain to get the middle cover off :D

    Thanks, Samy!

Yes, all the bolts are tight.

If I understand you, then it sounds like the intermediate plate will not come loose with the outer cover. Hard to tell from the parts diagram, but that is good news.

Below is a picture of the OE Benz sealant I think I'll be using. This is the good stuff and meant for metal-metal oil seals...and it's made in Italy! P/N 003 989 98 20 10

Yes you cant remove the intermediate plate #12 without removing the locknuts of the main and layshaft but you wont need to remove the plate if the leak is only between the leteral cover #1 and #12. I dont know exactly on the 355 but on the 348 gearbox you can remove the leteral cover #1 without removing the gearbox all inside the engine bay.

I dont know the mercedes sealant but aslong as it is oil resistant , heat resistant and stay flexible when dryed it should be fine.

    I use this one : http://vsr-shop.com/images/product_images/popup_images/765_0.JPG

Here is the leteral cover removed inside the engine bay. Should be enough room to clean the survace and reseal it. And i would use a new oilfilter good chance to do it.

I believe I *may* have the same problem. I have a very small drip (couple of drops/day or so) from what appears to be that exact area. I can't quite see exactly where, but will be bringing it in for my tech to look at in the next couple of days or so. I hope that's what my issue is, as it seems like a *relatively* simple fix.

    I'll post any updates here.

Please post all updates! I believe I have a similar leak. I've been trying to find it, and have narrowed it down to a similar spot in the diagram above.

    Thanks!

Really common and is typically the intermediate plates as well as the end housings.

To do a repair it really needs to be removed from the car. Will require some special ring nut sockets too.

Thanks for responding after bringing back an OLD thread...

Do you know of any write-ups that are available? I have no problem doing the work, but like to have some sort of resource.

    Thanks again!

    Nope

Don't read or write write ups and have no idea of their existence.

During the first of two major services on my previous 355, I had a few leaks. The dealer advised resealing it all up, as well as doing the main seal between engine and transaxle. During the second major (five years later), it was still dry and not leaking.

Once it is done right they stay that way. Too bad Ferrari couldn't be bothered.
