Right don't know how to really say this but, I in gleaming and beaming F355 spider got taken quite comfortability at the lights and say a 400 meter dash by a MK5 GOLF GTI. HOW CAN THIS BE, I have had my f355 for a few years now and realise its not the quickest car of the mark, regard lesses of the stated figures, my 911 996 cab on 200 52 plate has beaten it on many occasions. But yet my 1998 spider on paper is 0.4 seconds faster 0-62.

My F355 hasn't been running the best over the winter so recently I had it checked by mark at MLD Cars, who found the lambda's had gone, there for I changed all four. This resolved the massive fuel consumption issues at low speeds. I haven't really thrashed it as I do with my other cars, namely the porsche and m3. But now the novelety of me finally owning my child hood dream had worn off I thought hey let me show this guy in is 9k GTI whose up my back end a thing or two. But boy was I wrong!

He was right up me on the round about so I flicked it into the exit and was starting to pull away this was around about 35 in second, then all of a sudden he comes up beside me and starts to pull away.

At this point I'm thinking somethings wrong, then obviously the general turbo via strait aspirated came into mind and to be fair I thought he will probably have me to about 60-70 from 30 due his turbo. Which did seem the case.

So when we pulled up at the lights I thought right now i'll show you, So the lights hit green, I floor it go side ways for about 1/2 second then take off with my Capristo Screeming. BUt low and behold we hit 30 ish and he's pulling away again. Now correct me if i'm wrong but the f355 does 0-62 in 4.7 and the Mk V Golf GTI 6.2. So whats gone wrong we got to about 70, I was trying to keep my rev's to be fair did fluf 3rd gear but even so, I should have left him. He was a car and half in front of me by now. If that was my porsche it would have been a good two car lengths in front of the GTI.

I understand that GTI turbos are geared up for street racing and the one I had was running 275 bhp with the remap, but it wooped my dream machine... why. Was I sold a false dream all those years ago at 12. I have had a 360 which wasn't as lethargic of the mark, but my f355 has always been my boyhood dream so I bought a 1998 with 16k Capristo and challenge grille, and racing cats to keep for ever and ever.

Please tell me there's something wrong with my car so I can regain some faith in the old horse, if so please could you tell me what it could be and how I could check. All I know it eats a fair bit of fuel even after the lambda are done, but with the S2 on at MLD everything seemed to be ok. Could a cylinder be missing as it not purring on idle, it blips a bit, but I'm sure Mark should be able to pick this up at MLD. Could my Capristo box be blowing as it sounds a bit flat at low revs, but does scream lovely at higher revs. Could it I, yep thats me master of cars am not driving it right. HELP
Oh please give me some comfort fellow breadwyn.

I have failed you all please forgive me, Hugo

probably heavily modded golf i would assume....

u really dont need to do a whole lot to a turbocharged car to make the faster in a straight line.....now getting them to behave in the twistys with all that tourque steer is another story :)

Do you know if his car was tuned? I have a friend with a Mk4 GTI with around 400hp, no rear seats etc..but from the outside it looks like your regular GTI. So once they have traction they will pull away.

It looked fairly stock to me, call me sad but I've located the car and am going to ask.

I would do the same because a stock GTI would not stand a chance against a healthy 355. Your 355 should even be faster than your 996. Are your tires shot?

Take the car to the dragstrip and see how you do. It's not the easiest car to drive quickly off the line so you may be surprised with your numbers until you find a good technique.

Does not matter who beat who. I'll take a non running, parked, totaled, engine missing, gearbox crunching 355 any day over a brand new GTI just to look at it. This comes from a guy who has had them all. VR6 GTI, M3 modified, 996 TT modified, 355s, 308 and a 328.

V6s are pretty fast but if it was a inline 4 with a turbo, its the same as the audi. That thing should not beat a 355 unless its modified.

I drive a MKV GTI. Mine is stock with the DSG transmission. It is really quick. With launch control I can do 0-60 in the 5.7 range. Stock is 200bhp 207lb torque. However with APR tuning (turbo intake and exhaust) the power goes to 330hp and 334lbs. The guy who beat you probably had some mods. Torque is where he got you. Pulls like a 4cyl freight train. :) Oh and I he ha DSG shifting at about .110 is really helpful. My best friend has a stick shift MKV and my car is almost a full second faster 0-60z

What happened isn't too surprising. The 355 really is slow before you get the revs up. Keep the revs above 5000 the whole time and you win.

+1 on the DSG advantage. The time lost between shifts in the Ferrari adds up. No such gap when using DSG or even a single clutch system like BMW's prior SMG.

I have a mildly modded MKVI GTI. Car is quick with NO torque steer (which I still am having a hard time believing). It has trouble putting down the power, but it is damn quick. Still, it is not as quick as a 355. But you can mod them into the 400hp range, which would challenge your car.

Something tells me this is a sleeper car. When I lived on the East Coast I knew this guy that had a totally stock looking 4 door BMW 3 series. From the outside you couldn't tell a thing but he had modded the heck out of it, NOS, the whole bit. I can't remember what it dynoed at but it was crazy.

There are guys that really get into having something that looks totally stock and then surprising the heck out of people.....sleepere;-)

I suspect you were his latest victim.

Must be tricked out they are not that quick. I remember once having a hard time keeping up with an old LeBaron all I could hear was the pop off valves from his turbos.

    355s aren't the fast by today's standards.

Just a reality and simple physics 375 hp and very little torque and it weighs what 3400 lbs?

Own it for the looks and sound.....it's not a good drag racer..

355 is simply not that fast light to light.. an avg F250 turbo D will smoke a 355 up to about 50mph

I would bet 50 million bucks that am F250 diesel couldn't beat a 355 to 50. Thats just absurd.

do a little homework. before you loose 50 mill. The 355 will also struggle against a Minicooper S John Works and the stock 2010 GTI V6 has a bone stock 0-60 time within 2 tenth of the 355. Mid 2000's Mustang GT's are also within a couple tenths. That's plenty of margin for driver to make a diff. Of course none of those cars interest me enough to own but the 355 was never meant to be a stoplight racer and isn't faster 0-60 than your average sportscar.

average sports car I would totally agree, there might be a chance, but a ford F250 diesel? Maybe, MAYBE a race to 20-25 with the truck in 4low but not to 50, I would stand by my bet. Also, the truck must be stock because I have seen the big oil burners do 10 sec 1/4 miles, but if your running 5 sec 0-60, your not going to lose to 2 1/2 ton truck running 7-8 sec 0-60.

and I agree that its not a drag racer, but its not a stretch to say that it can outrun a heavy duty pickup whose lot in life is towing things.

Call me crazy. I can't imagine this board would not be full of threads like "I just got my Ferrari and its great, just took it for a drive and a Dodge diplomat just stompped me, but its all good, because its not a race car so Im not upset.

    Exactly.

A 1998 355 spider is looking at a 5 sec 0-60 time. Thats not exactly fast by todays standards.

A stock GTI is only 1 sec slower...it wouldnt be hard to make up that difference.

Here is a shocker for you... a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 , which retails for $23k is just as fast as your F355.

Like Jetfixr says... a F355 is not a car to own if you want to be fast. Its the car to own to look good and sound good in. Plus its fun to drive in the twisties.

PS - before you think about calling me a hater...look at my 'cars owned'
