Hi Guys, I am restoring its convertible top. As some of you probably know, there are 2 pairs of cylinders. Does anyone know what the difference is between the right and the left secondary cylinders (the smaller ones) ? and what exactly is their function in the whole process? I cant exactly tell cos mine have been ripped out by previous sloppy owner. Are they Ferrari specific made? anyone knows the manufacturer of these pistons? By the way , I am also looking for a Ferrari document, that i need which shows the technical specifications of the car according to EG directive 99/0037EG. This is needed to request a new (and less expensive) certificate of conformity for my car which was also lost by previous owner. Can anyone help with that? thanks to ya'all!!
They are responsible for pushing and pulling the top section/horizontal movement of the top. AFter they do their job, the main pistons push the whole top down behind and the seats.
JGV I have a 360 spider - so I do not know if yours is the same as mine? (If they are - see pic) I replaced my because they were leaking with the OEM parts. My shop told me that I need to replace the cylinders + the hydraulic lines since the OEM parts only shipped as one unit. They were not cheap by the time parts + labors were added If you can do it yourself - prob will save a lot $$ in labor (about 13 hrs according to my bills) Image Unavailable, Please Login
IIRC the two cylinders at the bottom push the main frame up vertically. Then once at the top there function is over, then the two cylinders at the top push the hood frame arms out horizontally to close the roof. To open the roof the two top cylinders pull the horizontal arms back to the rear of the seats. Then as the pressure is released from the two bottom cylinders, the whole assembly lowers in big part by its own weight. Here's is a couple of useful videos on youtube of the whole process of both down and up. You can see all the functions including the seats moving forward and backwards. Hope this helps http://www.youtube.com/user/minatormyth#p/u/25/ceuC9VjrtKo http://www.youtube.com/user/minatormyth#p/u/24/JOC7r4EXWsg
Hi, no, I have a 355. What do you mean with OEM parts, do you mean non-F-parts? and what do they $$ then?
Yes i have seen these before, off course movies dont speak. So i am glad someone confirms the idea. Can anyone send me a picture of how the secondary cylinder is connected to the frame, I have the wel known schematics from ricambiamerica etc.. but they dont show it. So a pic showing this taken from within (under the roof) the car would be very welcomed. thanks.
If no one posts a picture by tomorrow, i will take one just for you and post it up I would take and post a video of the cylinder rams operating from inside the cockpit, but as you say. Videos dont speak
JGV I meant my Fparts went bad and had to replace with the same Fparts since I do not know if there is a secondary market for these parts. There were no markings on the parts to ID who might have manufactured them.
I can send you a copy of my certificate of conformity (I also have a 355 Spider). All technical specs are detailed. Philippe
Hi Philippe, yeah, that would be great, based on that info, I can complete my file for COC request with our governement. for privacy, you can send it to [email protected]. Looking forward, J
I would have thought some one might have jumped in with some pictures by now, but hey. Right hand side upper cylinder/ram. Hard to see from the pictures the very top of the cylinder/ram. I have removed the plastic cover/shroud from the underside for a clearer picture set. http://img511.imageshack.us/i/imag0228a.jpg/ http://img832.imageshack.us/i/imag0231q.jpg/ http://img266.imageshack.us/i/imag0232ha.jpg/ http://img148.imageshack.us/i/imag0233r.jpg/

I have removed the plastic cover/shroud from the underside for a clearer picture set. when you look at pic 228a, out of curiousity.....when the piston pushes (extracts),it tilts the movable clamp down wich pushes on a short metal support (in right upper corner of pic.)closing the top. So far so good, this part i understand BUT,,, then,, when the piston re-tracts, it pulls this movable clamp backwards,, fine,, but the hinge (joint) of the clamp is solidly fixed to same bar as to which piston is attached, so the clqmp goes bqckwards untill a full stop to the frame it is attached to,,so how does it retract the roof top to open (horizontally, I mean) then? J
G'day Philippe, I noticed you said you could provide JGVF355 with a copy of your certificate of conformity for a 355. I'm also after a copy if that's possible. I am trying to build a body of evidence so as i can have the 355 complied in Australia. Cheers,Jason.
