I have a 328 GTS. I am selling it to buy a 355 Spider. I found one that I fell in love with. It is black on black with challenge grill. The car has 14,000 miles with service records. Here's my question. The engine has valve problems and being rebuild by a mechanic that I use on my 328. Should I stay a way from it because it had valve problems or once it is fixed it should be good to go? Also will the engine rebuild hurt me for re-sale? This is a 1997. What would be a fair price?
    Thanks for the help!

If everything checks out and the 30K service has been done, it should be a $80,000 +/- a couple of thousand. I sold my 1996 spider in March 2005 and I think prices have come down a little since. It was red/tan, no 30K service and 23K miles and it sold for 73K. A black car should go for a little less since there is a smaller audience for it. The 355 spider is a great car and you will love it!

IMO - there were more than a few with the Valve problems - if corrected properly - this would not be a bad thing... Actually since 355's are known and often over rumored to have these problems - by having it done by a good mechanic and well documented - this should actually help in resale (or at least not hurt you at all).

Assuming you are in the US - (fill out your profile - that would be a big help in giving us some location based info.)

On the price - there are a lot of variables - since they are doing the valves, engine out service - and sorting everything out - that is a huge plus. Cosmetically if it is very good and it is a low miles with only 14K miles. Assuming no accidents, etc.

I would say if you could get it for 85K or less - that would be good deal. I think in the high 70's (assuming the above) would be a great deal.

Have them check the shocks while they are there - replacing those can be expensive - and often times you will see one or two that are bad - I think they run 800 new - so worth a full check in that regard. Have the mechanic do a full PPI, and look over to give to the full comfort.

Remember any add-ons - like the challenge grille, exhaust, stereo, etc. are nice to haves - they really don't help the resale - so don't pay a priemum for these items - unless you have to have them.

I sold my 328 to buy a '97 355 spider , which i recently sold. I would agree , if you get the work done that should assure a future buyer that those particular issues have been dealt with. Nothing wrong with that. The pricing comments are in the ballpark also. Good luck. You won't regret owning a 355 spider.

Mike, It might not deter me from purchasing the car if I was confident the work was done correctly. But, it would diminish the value for me and I would adjust the price accordingly.

    Hello:

Just got my 95 F355 Spider back from its 2nd major engine out service (49K+ miles on the odometer) - I documented the entire process with photos and kept the original valve guides. From those who I have spoken with feel it is probably better that the valve guide work has been done - BTW the car runs incredible since the recent work.

I enjoy my 355 much more than my past 3x8 car.
