I recently had two new tires installed on my car that has the original factory wheels. unfortunately, the machine scratched the rim of one of the wheels. Beyond disappointing, yes, but my question is: I notice that below the clear coat and the silver paint, there appears to be a red primer or undercoat of some type -does anyone know with certainty if this was how they came from the factory? ...

They came from Speedline Itally with a chemical convergence coating (Dow 7 or equal). All magnesium alloy wheels must have this coating for any finish to adhere properly. A primer is applied over the Dow 7 and then the silver paint followed by the clear coat. Without the Dow 7, any paint will bubble and blister over time (see thread by Bradan on Fchat for refinishing 355 wheels).

I have scratches on my factory wheels (not challenge wheels) and its not red underneath, but it doesn't really mean anything.

I lightly curbed my drivers rear this summer pulling away from a drunk girl on the corner one night. She said she was fine and waved me off ;) Anyway, the GM paint is a great match and the clearcoat works well. Just do the prep and wet sand. You can get an alloy filler if its deep. I had just a couple inch long gouges in the lip. Spokes were fine. My new OZs are 10 times as awesome :D
