Looking for the easiest way to remove the thermostat housing and replace the thermostat - what is the best way, what other components need to be removed, is it easier from above or below? (I have access to a 2post car lift).

Do it from above. It cannot be done from below.

It much easier with the lid removed (5 mins)

    1. lid
    2. coolant tank shroud
    3. top coolant hose from thermostat housing to radiator cross pipe
    4. T-stat housing

Reverse process, fill up with new coolant.

Thanks - I wondered about removing the lid - seems that is what will make the task much easier.

I was just about to replace mine also and also wondered about the lid. seemed like it, but wanted to check. Mine definetly seems to run cool after warm up and a constant speed. I just replaced both pre cat O2 sensors, which was a bit of work, not terribly hard with alift, but with big hands.............

Thanks for all the help, always top notch suggestions from all.

Based on my 1st go around with replacing the thermostat, I wouldn't do it without removing the lid. I had a bit of a battle removing the old hose - it was stuck on pretty well and stiff - likely the original hose. Then I couldn't get it back on - bought a new hose which was much more flexible and went right on - so you may want to consider a new hose at the same time.

Also, I didn't realize the throttle cable bracket was anchored with one of the thermostat studs, so the car had too much slack in the cable and lousy throttle response.

Definitely a learning experience, but the new thermostat is working great, the throttle is adjusted better and all is well.
