    Hi all

I have recently developed a whine which is directly related to engine speed and not transmission speed. It is not consistently there but is generally speaking not present on cold start and then on and off throughout warm usage.

I have therefore ruled out the secondary air pump sound on cold start which most people seem to report.

Closest thing I could compare it to would be supercharger whine.

Any guidance to prepare me for the worst would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

    Will

There's an alternator and power steering pump to consider too. Is you power steering reservoir full?

The bearing at the back of the pumpkin can also make such a noise--it runs at engine speed.

Maybe it's the wife whining as you buy more parts on your credit card? Kidding, had to say it!
Is it more noticed driving very slow and try turning wheels back and forth, just a test on steering pump? Flick on AC and see if it comes or goes?

I had more of a shrill screeching noise. Started out as a faint scraping noise, got louder over time. It was intermittent. Went on for about three months of driving, then after about 600 miles, the throwout bearing housing cracked and let go....with all the hydraulic fluid draining out, and no more clutch action.

All of the above suggestions plus don't forget the AC compressor. Mine was bad and a rebuild did the trick. Get a 3 foot section of 1/2 " tubing and hold one end at your ear and then go exploring with the other end to isolate the sound. You will be surprised what you may find. Good luck.
