Gotcha - do you have any pics of the crank adapter? Curious what that looks like. I think no matter what, you'd want to modify the cross member, it's always going to be in the way. A split fuel tank or moving to the frunk makes the most sense.

I've taken a grinder, big hammer and welder to my 355 already to fix the shock towers, so I've already gone through that scary part :). Ultimately, it's just a car. That said, this is more to satisfy my curiousity than due to any big plans I might have.

Hoping that v12 355 you have gets an f40 body still :)

Ha both of us have no fear, ours will never be a 355 again so not a concern.

No pics to hand sorry, if you think of the part of the 355 crank that goes through the crank seal at that end of the block, if you chopped that actual chunk off then bolted it the new engines crank instead of the flywheel then that is essentially what it is, protrudes further out to seal into the gearbox beyond the gearbox case adapter, and internally it is splined to take the external splines of the gearbox propeller shaft to allow direct drive to the flywheel and clutch at the other end of the 355 gearbox.

would much rather just mod/update the 355 engine to get more power. would be much easier accomplish and probably drive better too

I don't think it'd be any easier tbh - a lot less availability on 355 hop up parts. There's toda in japan, who only make the stuff on request (so be prepared to wait) and a company in belgium that makes cams. Or if you have a lot of connections, maybe you could get Michellotto to do a run of some parts - good luck. Huge money and wait times for any of those. I honestly think a 458 engine would be cheaper than any of those routes and you could find one a lot more quickly. It'd also probably still have 70hp over a completely on edge f129 build, it's just a much bigger and more modern engine.

That said, I 100% agree that'd be the way I'd go. If you're gonna play, might as well pay and go nuts. A 10k rpm 355 based motor running 13:1 compression making 500hp would be absolutely wicked. And probably blow up after a few thousand miles. But those would be glorious miles.

And how will ancient 355 chassis hold up to 458 engine? In end, less cost and effort to just have both a 458 and 355. I guess makes sense if already have a 355 that needs a new motor...

Ferrari did not leave much on the table to play with in regards to the 355 engine spec, it's pretty much at its peak. Even the challenge cars had standard engines. In hillclimbing they gave up and fitted a v8 zytek engine and sequential box, so the chassis has the ability to handle much more power once an integrated cage is installed.

This sounds like the perfect engine for a Fiat X1/9

Nice try, but that's an Enzo (prototype) chassis with a 348 front end and doors - Not a 348 with an Enzo engine fitted! :)

It has a full 348 interior and appears very much to be a 348 which was extended to fit the engine.

There's a 355 with a TR flat 12 in it somewhere, so there's evidently space in there.
I'd say mating the 430 box to the 458 lump should be straight forward enough (adaptor plates are simple).
Likewise fabricating some engine mounts (maybe easier to simply weld a new point to the subframe and use standard mounts).
Its routing all the other pipes and connectors that takes the time. Good luck with the power steering, radiator and heater line hookups....
Also, not sure if 430 uses rob or cable gear linkage...
