For the lucky few with an F40 (and the judges who assess originality) does something like the oil filter actually matter? The original F40 filters are tough to find, and the 'accepted' solution for actually using the car seems to be a modern 197654 filter + adapter. Yes, that works just fine.

BUT, for judging purposes, is there value in original? I've had these 3x iterations of early F40 oil filters sitting on the shelf for eons and wonder if they're worth listing on eBay:

    Thoughts? Comments?

Would an owner operate the car with a modern 197654 filter, then swap on the 'vintage' one before judging? Seems like a PITA to me... but are there judging points to be earned?

It all depends on what event. Stupid judging decisions at some events know no bounds. If it is Cavallino or FCA National event consumables are not judged and an oil filter is without question a consumable. I know vintage 12 owners and restorers just cannot stand not seeing Fram orange filters so I am told they buy Baldwins, repaint them and put Fram decals on them but that is a treatable OCD affliction. It has nothing to do with scoring.

    Guilty!!!

Any color aside from Fram orange is distracting when it comes to a car that will be judged. If the car is a driver, I can be quite reasonable. :)

We have come to expect it from you and your ilk Mr Hoffman.

There are some NOS Chinetti Baldwins on eBay now that might be a bit of a reference (https://www.ebay.com/itm/155061386422?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=OEcqDPUuQJe&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=m3fFnKJrS6q&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY). It's very difficult to find those Chinetti Baldwins used, that's the first time I've seen NOS versions. The used are typically listed around the same price, but don't know if they actually sell.

I wouldn't put any of these NOS filters on even temporarily for a show due to potential degradation from age (they may be fine to use, but would not even think about risking it).

I would guess they have some collector value for someone's shelf, though the Chinetti Baldwins are a little sexier than these newer filters for that purpose.
