Hi All; I have a US 1991 model F40. The exhaust is the Tubi that starts after the cats (I call it very quiet). Can I just get a cat 'bypass pipe' , store the cats elesewhere, and be good to go?? Questions: Will it be ridiculously lleaving the current Tubi set-up intact, but circumventing the cats? IS this a viable set-up? or... Do I have to take a different approach? Second I am looking at the chip from www.tap1.com which comes with new valves for the turbos to increase boost pressures. $595. Anybody know anything about it? It's in the FCA monthly...claims max 565hp with the setup. Seems cheap! Thanks to all for your help! Carlo
First off....I'm in awe of your car, the F-40 is an icon. I have heard an F-40 with just a Tubi, no cats, and it was "growly" but not too loud. This is a subjective opinion and I'm one who likes to hear the car a bit. The turbos do muffle the exhaust note somewhat also. If it were me I'd remove the cats and put them in storage for the future. I'm sure some more experienced F-40 people will speak up.....
Sorry my first post wasn't edited as I wanted. The one question was suppose to say 'would it be ridiculously loud if I left everything as it is now, but removed the cats, stored fro whenever I might need them, and put in a bypass pipe?' sorry for the confusion. and the chip question any opinions on would be greatly appreciated. My pockets aren't as depp as some so I don't want to wreck the car pissing around TOO much. Thanks all
Im confused !!! You don't have deep pockets ?? You say you own a f40, a 330gt, had a 360 and just swapped for a 430. And apparently you said that the 330 was a concours winning car in florida. I think you can tinker with a f40 surely ? Why not ask the dealer or people you orginally purchased it from ? Im confused.
Hi CAMPARR40 ; Thanks for the post. I did go to that thread but didn't find the answer specific to the way I wanted to run mine. Being just the post-cat Tubi system, but with the cats off the car. I'm not calling it sport, LM because there were different opinions as to what each was. Mine has the quiet Tubi, I just wanted to know about loudness, and negative implications (if any) of deleting the cats in this config. Thanks again for your help.
the pockets just look deeper than they are. It's a wonder what low interest rates can do for a guy with a sickness for Ferrari. I figure that any of the older cars are like an RRSP....except we can drive them! If they are likely to appreciate ...it makes sense to speculate. So I explained to my wife that "it's just like borrowing for an RRSP'. That's my story and I am sticking to it. Ciao
Eliminating the cats will increase the sound, but should still be reasonable. The car only gets rude when you run a LM (comp) Tubi and no cats...
I'm using a TAP chip in both my 512TR and 348 Spider, and both have worked fine. Although, I have a strange "flat spot" at the top of the HP and Torque curve on the dyno on my 512, and still have to investigate to see if it's the chip that's causing it. I am using a Carobu Engineering chip in my F40. I couldn't find anything about the valves on the TAP site. How exactly are they messing with the boost? Be VERY careful there... Also, the page talking about the chip on the TAP site asks for the bosch part number for the ECU. That would make me a little worried - the F40 ECUs are Weber-Marelli. SteveJ
Just a thought....If you remove the 2 turbos from an f40.....Does that mean it is as slow or as fast as an 80 308? Just A Thought
Carobu chip in your f40...has does it work for you? Was it a self install? Boost pressure ? any other parts come with the chips to be installed. Be very much appreciated if you could give me a few more details. Cost for chip? Txs Kindly. Carlo
Yes it was a self install. I don't remember the exact price for just the chip (they sell it as part of the LM turbo kit), but I think it was a little bit north of $1K. I recommend getting a friend who has experience installing these types of chips, because they can be a little tricky sometimes. Radio Shack makes an IC installer that really works well. The Carobu chips are designed to be used with the LM turbos only, which if you haven't already done it is the best upgrade you can do for your F40. I believe I'm averaging around 19lbs of boost. But that's not solely determined by the chip. You can modify the wastegate spring tension to adjust that (be careful and search the forum for a few threads that address this before doing so).
you forget to figure for the super low compression which will make the motor a slouch, and it has to overcome the gigantic tires im sure the motor is far more advanced as its what, 12 years newer than 308? not to mention a built motor as far as street ferraris go. just built for boost is the problem. would be a great race to see, then you race them against a new minivan and watch them all hang even together?
