Hi Guys, im working on an F40 that has not had the fuel filters change for some time and was wondering where they are located and if there are any special parts that need replacing (o rings) before they come apart and clog the injectors

Good move on the fuel filters. The byproduct of fuel tanks that are now 20 to 25 years old is problematic. It doesn't matter how many or few miles the car has. The stuff coming out of the tanks goes right to the filters. In my opinion, the fuel filters are undersized and there are much better options. Use Bosch filters. Call Dave Helms.

    (303) 938-9000. www.****************.com. While you're there, you might want to look into the fuse box option. F40s do well that have fuse box, ECM and ECU issues addressed. I'm aware of a car that had nothing done and it burned to the ground.

F40s are a real gas but they have to be attended to, regardless of miles.

2200 miles is a great car. Here are a few issues that will need to be addressed, regardless of miles. The discussion on each of these is extensive and I would suggest you get in touch with a professional Ferrari technician.

Ferrari recall for suspension mounting brackets\grommets.

Flush the entire coolant sytem. If you don't have documented records of radiator\cooling system flushes, observe carefully what comes out of the cooling system the first time you flush it. If needed, the radiator may need an acid wash bath by an radiator specialist supervised by you or your Ferrari professional. Careful with the choice of solvent.

Whether an F40 has 22, 2200 or 22,000 miles, if the tanks have had gas in them, there is a nasty by-product coming out of the tanks that will flow through your fuel system. Remove and clean all injectors. Change the fuel filters. Fuels produced today cause these particular injectors to gum-up over time. Do it routinely.

Check the last cam belt replacement date and by whom.

    All hoses. They're too old.

The cam covers will leak oil from this era 308 based engine. The simple fix is to drill a weep hole in the cam seal area, which allows oil to drain back into the engine. This is done with an engine out service. If you can live with a little bit of oil on the floor, leave it alone.

If you don't know if the turbos were warmed up to operating temperature and then allowed to cool down while the engine was running after a spirited run, check them carefully. In my opinion, high RPM heat cycles without being followed by low, cooling RPM cycles compromise the turbos. If you don't know and want to be absolutely sure, remove and rebuild.

If you're going to drive it for a while, put a fire suppression system on it. Purists have issues with this but the car is simply worth too much not to be prepared for that one in a million chance.

The original fuse box on an F40 was the best that could be done at the time. However, if you want to drive the car, it will give you challenges. There are some ingenious fixes to this issue.

The real list is quite extensive. This is just a simple overview of a few things I've seen F40 owners discuss. Of course, do all the normal and customary maintenance procedures.

Have fun with the car - they're great!

The coolant is mandatory and make sure there is no electrolysis, one thing I hate about aluminum. The fuels now have 10 percent ethanol witch I no didn’t help the filters... Is there foam or a bladder in the fuel tanks?

The timing belt is my MANE CONSERN, I haven’t had it over 3,000rpm... I don’t won’t to pop the motor as you know THAT WOULD BE BAD.

The hoses are holding so fare, and it had a drop of oil out of the front mane seal or cam seals until I started running low rpm heat cycle’s witch it’s never hand and the leak stopped so fare, and of course after little drive I always let turbo’s cool down.

Fire extinguisher is mandatory, from what you have said about the fuse box, it spooks me... but its bin ok so fare, I may end up replacing it if I start to drive it at all.

Is there any up-side to it being a euro car? (probly not)

Thank you so much for the info

I think (?) the Euro spec cars weigh less due to emission and crash standards differences between the U.S. and Europe that were in place at the time. For the weight of the F40 on a real live scale, see the thread in this section Curb Weight: US Superferraris. I think the last post on the thread was about 2 1/2 months ago.

Some, if not all, of the Euro F40s had fuel bladders. If your car does, they will probably need to be changed. There are a number of threads in this section on the Euro fuel bladders.
