Hey guys First post here so go easy I'm trying to find out the history of the F40 GT at DK. This is the same car: 1989 Ferrari F40 LM Would anyone happen to know anything about this car please? Many thanks in advance.
Lol thanks Traveller - I read on here it was stolen in Italy then rebuilt when it came into the UK. And apart from the link above there doesn't seem to be much info on the web. Would you kindly be able to provide anymore details please that could assist me? Btw your restoration thread is excellent
Regardless of what it was, surely what it is now is all that matters? Tims had clearly been hacked about over the years but is probably better now than it was when brand new. this one is not claiming to be a one owner, untouched from new F40. As long as its priced right it looks to be a great usable example (subject of course to a thorough examination.)
I believe history is a key selling point in the F40 market and when spending over half a million i think it would be good of me to do a little homework first I'm less worried about mods and mileage but I wouldn't be too happy buying the car then finding out it was totalled in a GT race and the driver burnt alive with his remains stuck to the chassis... I just want to find out of there are any horror stories. I think you can understand my caution
I agree, the difference was my car actually raced, had a thorough race conversion, was documented as such and it's racing history was endlessly reported.. There is no evidence this car got anywhere near a track and I have already provided my thoughts privately. In short, if the price is right, if someone thoroughly checks out the car for any signs of serious damage, underneath what is a pure cosmetic add on, there lurks a standard F40, but nothing more. Bear in mind it has been on the market for at least 2 years.
i think people attribute far too much importance to the history of these cars. yes, you do not necessarily want to buy a car that has had somebody die in it - all a matter of perception. but, for most of the rest of it - well, **** happens. a car thats been in an accident and has not been burned or a bent frame, and just had a whole bunch of wrinkled or cracked parts replaced with the same brand new parts, is not a big deal. i agree there are those that want a fresh from the wrapper car with no miles on it. but for the rest of us that actually like to drive, a couple of bumps that have been put right by knowledgeable expert, are really inconsequential. my cs did 2 hard track seasons before i bought it, then it did another 2 hard seasons with me. then i put it all back to stock at the dealer and sold it for the same price as most garage queens. the buyer liked that it had history, and had been tested. i would not hesitate to buy it back.
Just seen the price at £575,000 which is a good and realistic starting point for a non standard car IMHO, albeit I would still want a thorough check, chassis engine, the lot. With a clean history, the price would be very different.
Thanks for the responses. Who are the recommended specialists in the South East who could perform a thorough inspection on an F40?
Thanks for all the responses guys. To bring this thread to a conclusion I contacted all the people who apparently had been involved with this car (according to publicly available information on the web) and for whatever reason nobody was willing to discuss this car at all. Based on this, the lack of history and never being able to verify the mileage of this car, I have reasonably decided that the purchase would be too risky for me. That said it looks lovely and I am sure someone else could be very happy with it. Thanks for your time and help.
