I ran across some original p/n (not the "updated" p/n) F40 turbos for sale that have been rebuilt by a previous F40 owner (at a turbo shop). His turbo seals blew so he installed new turbos and rebuilt the old ones but never reinstalled them.

Can the IHI turbos be rebuilt when the seals blow? A couple of people on the board, including Roland, have said no – but no specifics.

I see a variety of IHI seal rebuild kits on the market. What can’t be rebuilt on an F40 turbo? Why?

I assume it may have something to do with the early turbo using bushings instead of roller bearings?

Any info would be appreciated. I was going to pick up the rebuilt IHIs for stock given a very good price, but don’t want to pick up junk.

    Thanks,

    Tim

I thought about rebuilding mine but what happened when the bushing failed was the impeller blades came in contact with the inside of the housing which damages them. You might be able to find a new cartridge but getting the same rotor assembly would be difficult?
