Very cool. Just a suggestion.. but what about making this in two pieces? You could even go so far as to have three layers (one for each color- red, black, silver) that would really give the piece some depth if they were about an 1/8" apart. -Chris
Hi Guys, I managed to get Roy's F40 done and a better picture taken. You can see a higher resolution photo here, along with some of my other artwork: http://www.myweb.cableone.net/thor276/SCULPT/SCULPT.HTM I have to make and ship a few more of these to fill your orders before I can get back to doing one with color... I should get to that one next week after Rampage is over when I get back. Hi Chris, I've thought about doing something like that, using different metals for each layer: blued steel for black as the back piece, then copper for red, and stainless for silver on top. I can also do it by electroplating onto the steel, but the added depth from layering might be more interesting. Thor
Thor, That looks GREAT! I'm excited to see it in person (perhaps later this week?) I assume this is the picture that was used as the basis... Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yup, that's the picture I started from, Roy. I have a tool path file for the entire picture as well, but I haven't cut it out yet. I just got the fine-cut tips in I need to do it with, but I have to machine a spacer for the shield since the tip of the nozzle isn't meant to drag on the metal it's cutting. Next week. I now know some shipping costs now... The thicker pieces weigh in at 12 lbs (with packaging) so the shipping is about $12 for Ground for halfway across the US, 2nd day is around 4X as much, 3 day is somewhere in between. On the artwork, I can do the pieces out of 16 gage for $55 as originally estimated, but in my opinion the metal should be thicker. The 16 gage steel is a bit too flexible at the connection points in the pieces since it's flat, and the metal warps a bit more than I'd like when it gets cut. I tried a couple out of 12 gage and it turned out much nicer, but 12 gage will be more expensive. (Roy's pictured in the link above is 12 gage, the one at the beginning of the thread is 16 gage.) There is more than twice as much steel in 12 gage, it takes twice as long to cut, and the consumables last about half as long. Overall I need to double the price to stay even using 12 gage steel. Those of you who are more discriminating will pick the thicker metal and the much higher quality pieces for $110. Those of you who are more price driven, I will still supply the pieces out of 16 gage steel for the $55 price. Just be advised, there is a big difference. Thor
Thor, Seeing what you have done has inspired me to try my hand at the same photo. Here are some effects I did on the computer. Can't wait to see one of yours painted. Ross Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Roy, Nope, no need to send me the difference. We had already agreed on a price and my honor means more to me than money. Besides, if it wasn't for your piece I wouldn't have any data on whether the 12-gage steel was going to work. You should have it in a couple of days! Thor
Hey Ross, Nice special effects! I recognize a few of those tricks, since I tried a few out myself before I settled on a different tactic. I had dreams of generating the line drawing to use to make the tool paths for the torch using techniques like that, but that was a ridiculous pipe dream. I do them by hand now, since it's actually a lot quicker for me just to do it in AutoCad in the first place. Thor
Aight, if you're sure... YOU ROCK! I look forward to it's arrival and I'll post some pics when I get it put up in my "Ferrari Room"
Hey Guys, I have one painted using mostly solid colors... I want to do one with a lot more detail also, but this is what I have until I get more time. Thor Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hey Guys, I have a prototype website set if, if you're interested... It's a bit rough and unfinished, but I think you'll get the idea. Next week when I get back I'll get a 308 GTS done you can look at. I've had more requests for a 308 than any other so far. Thor http://www.myweb.cableone.net/thor276/javelinart.htm
Thor, That looks great. I am definately going to have to order one. I'm going to wait awhile to see what other things you come up with. Keep up the good work. Ross
Thor, Checked your new site out today. It looks great. Do you have any plans to add Shelby as a marque? I figured some Cobra shots would make good looking metal art. I have alot of photos of Cobras if you are interested. I still can't get over how your painted F-40LM looks 3-D. Can't wait to see your next project. Ross
Thor, I have an archive of litterally 1,000's of hi-res pictures that I would be more than happy to let you use - just about any manufacturer and/or car you can think of. Check my website: www.rjdigital.net for some examples... Also, a point of clarification, I'm 99% sure that the F40 LM that this is all based on is NOT Roland Linder's car...
I see some differences but it might have been an older configuration. Here's a pic from March. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Not that it really matters, but for clarification, Thor's subject car belongs to Benny Caiola. This is evidenced by ID'ing the logo just above the NACA intake. Just thought people would like to know.
so, the mail lady came today, and brought me a metal bundle of joy... I must say, it's simply FABULOUS! sorry for the low quality of the attached pic, but I thought I'd share... Thor did an EXCELLENT job, and I will be purchasing future work from him. Amazing product, great price (even if I hadn't gotten it for what I did), great communication and FAST delivery. Thor gets a gold star in my book - GREAT JOB and thank you again Thor. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Guys, I just got back from Vegas last night... Wow, what a rush! There were 4 or 5 F-40's, a black Enzo (that never moved, dang it) 50+ other Ferrari's, over a dozen or two Lamborghini's including the two Murcielago Roadsters, and a mixture of other stuff including Vipers, Cobras, Porshes, etc. We had an entire section of the parking garage just for us with a guard standing by. To answer a few questions and comments, Thanks for the compliments, Roy! I'm glad you like it. My pleasure. And yes, I would LOVE access to your photos... VERY NICE. Vanny, yes I will be doing a 360 and a 430 soon, after I get a 308 done. I want to do one of my Mondial too here real soon, now that I've got the body work done and the new wheels and tires on it. You guys are right, it's Benny Caiola's car not Roland Linder's. I wish I'd known that before I talked to Roland on Friday night. He really liked the sculpture and signed the photo I had with me of it, which was really cool. With the stickers removed, there isn't any difference between the appearance of the cars. Roland's is tweaked out to 720 hp, though... It really screams down the freeway when he cuts loose with the throttle. The F40's and the Lambo guys got a bit rowdy on the freeway back from the golf course friday afternoon. Ross, pick out a few of your best photos of each car and email them to me, if you would. We toured the Shelby Cobra plant north of Las Vegas on the way to the race track! Got to see a few REALLY nice cars in the showroom in the front before touring the back assembly and work areas where they had a row of prototypes all lined up. Cobras, GT-40's, and maybe and older mustang or two like the GT-500 in the lobby will make it on my list to sculpt. I just started, so it may take a while to get to everything I'd like to do. Blair at work has 6-1/2 mustangs, a basement full of parts, and is building a Shelby GT-500, so I have to at least do one of those for him. I forgot to mention before, the painted F-40 is painted with Ferrari Rosso Corsa paint then clear-coated, not imitation red Krylon just in case you guys wondered. Thor
