What motor oil are you guys running in your F40?

When I initially had the car serviced the dealer use Shell 5W40 synthetic with the picture of the Ferrari shield on the bottle. The operating manual specifies 10W40.

Was thinking of going with Shell 5W40 synthetic or Mobil 1 0W40. The only quality 10W40 I can find is Mobile 1 but in that viscosity range it is extended wear.

    Any thoughts.

    Appreciate,

10W60 gives you more margin at high temperatures.
A clear recommendation by the experienced workshops and concessionaires I know.
Shell and Agip are the typical choices. I'm happy with Shell.

Motor Oil now is a lot different from Motor Oil in 1987, mostly for the better. Lack of ZDDP worries me, but the quality of a good synthetic oil from Mobil 1, Shell, Agip, Castrol are all excellent and as good or better than anythign in 1987.

I personally use the Mobil 1 0W-40 or 5W-40 sythentic - the 40 is the hot viscosity and IMO the lower the viscosity cold the better on startup.

What I think is one of the best motor oils on the market for street use is Mobil Delvac 1 (yes I nkow it is designed for diesel vehicles, but it has additives that are just fine for gasoline engines - only question being if it might have too much ZDDP)

I don't know if a ZDDP additive makes sense in the F40. Too much is bad for the catalytic converters.

Going with a 60 weight IMO is a bad idea unless you are actually tracking the car and getting the oil hot, as in 250 deg F or hotter.

The 10W60 is similar in its behaviour to a 10W40 at low and medium temperatures - as opposed to a classic 60, i.e. 20W60 (used for motorbikes like the Ducati superbikes).
But when/where the oil gets hot the 10W60 is safer than a 10W40. That's why 10W60 is often used for turbo engines.

I have endurance raced turbo cars with oil temps of 250+ for 6 hours with no ill effects using Mobil 1 10W-40 and no ill effects. Nothign wrong with 10W-60 but for a street-driven F40 I personally don't use it and don't think it is necessary.

If you really want to deep dive on oil, thsi is the best web site I have ever seen:

The best modern day equivalent would be Red Line 5w-40.

Correction; I'm running redline 5W40, not RP as previously stated. No particular reason, just that is what my mechanic put in it. My only complaint is the oil is so clear its almost impossible to see it on the dipstick. But I think that is a problem with other synthetic oils in general.

I'm running Redline 5w-40. I buy it by the case since I started using it first on my 328 GTB 7 years ago. No one has ever said anything but great things about it.
