Stumbled across the show a few minutes ago; interesting stuff about the frame!
I hope they do "loose their ass's" Would serve them right for butchering up a master piece, and for thinking they can "make it better"...LOL. Dumb red neck hicks. Of course reality TV is mostly fake so you'll never know.
They are building a car that isn't a true F40 the paint is one thing but making a car lower to the ground is going to make it less valuable. If I was Ferrari I wouldn't recertify a car that these hacks are chopping on.
The F40 is my ultimate most favorite car ever. Seeing that black F40 on the track, made me like it a ton. I was skeptical at first, but I think it looks great.
y'all are obviously knowledgeable and i know nothing of cars. just wondering what your take is on the guy buying him out. do you think the show asked him to do it so that the gas monkey garage wouldn't come off as failures? or is that car actually worth the $750k that the guy actually paid for it?
I loved the Days of Thunder tribute. But then again, I'm quite entertained by that scene. I didn't like the quick steps they took in the repair when holes didn't line up, but I suspect drivers won't ever notice. Still wondering why the motor mount was 1/2" out, though, when they were supposed to be getting everything within ~0.1", and then claimed everything was within 0.04". Except for... one MOTOR MOUNT!
it isn't worth $750k. I like the car though, it still has a Ferrari soul and better like this than a junk yard. It isn't a replica which I hate, it is a real Ferrari, but far from original.
+1 I thought it turned out great. It looks so bad ass The only thing I would change are the head lights but overall I like it Offers at 900k? Maybe a little artistic license used but who cares. I enjoyed the episodes
I love it... I was pessimistic about it at first like you all, especially getting ripped off for $400k junk, but their final product is pretty sweet.
i often wonder, how the buyers feel after they see the show and realize what how much they were taken. But then again, I call B*****T, as this is hollywood. Did anybody determine what they actually paid for the car? With our Fchat resources, i'm sure we could see what they actually put into the car to repair it.
seriously doubt they have that much in the car. By a large margin. But overall i like the car. Minus the led lights, projectors would have been cool.
They got the frame so straight to within 1mm that the trans wouldn't fit without hacking up the mount. Gas monkey's been sniffing too many fumes.
If someone is willing to pay that much for an old bus let 'em pay! Nobody ripped anybody off, that's the business. I think the F40 turned out pretty sweet. It looks incredible in black and the HRE rims were a great choice with the only negative being those cheesy LED headlights. At least this car will have a chance at a proper life now. You never have to worry about it being original again and the owner can drive the crap out of it.
The sale seemed like a total setup to me. I wonder if we'll ever know the truth behind why it went down that way. I have my theories. It was so hilarious when Richard asked the mechanic what Ferrari enthusiasts will think of the car. That look the mechanic gave him was epic. And when the mount was off by 1/2" - o.m.g. For the amount of money they supposedly blew on this project, Dennis would have been better off with a F12 or a 599 GTO.
I think they said they had $750k into it. "Offers at 900k." And the money guy bought it for 900k... Right? LIke others, I suspect Dennis bought it for the show to save face, as I doubt anyone else would buy it at that amount... Bo
I think that was the plan from the get-go, that he wanted a hot-rod f40 and they figured they'd use it for the show and create a little money story around it to pump the value up if/when he wants to sell it. I thought it looked great and the headlights even worked better than I had thought. Those complaining about the motor mount not lining up have obviously never worked on a Ferrari. I think they found the trans case cracked at some point and had to replace it, and we all know the parts aren't all the same on these cars, especially a lower production car like the f40. I've found a few head scratchers on my f355 and that was produced in much higher numbers and quite a few things changed after the first year of production, so you can bet that there were a number of differences between first run/last run F40's and the known differences between euro/usa f40's. If they put an early gearbox housing in a later production car or vice versa, one of the mounts could have been slightly different and it's not like they kludged the fix by reaming the hole out, they cut the whole thing out and welded it back in where it needed to be.
I was apparently so disturbed by the finished car that my wife just told me i was going on and on, talking in my sleep about a butchered F40. : ) i think i was more upset in my sleep than awake! Though i dont hate it at all. Looks great....except those ghastly LEDs. Yikes!
I think it was $400K for the car, $300K parts and labor + $100K on top of that, so he's in at $800,000.
You couldn't fix up a Chevy in 60 days if it was in that condition, let alone an F-40. Not if it was done right. As was stated, Hollywood B.S. I can't believe they painted black over red, and a quicky job at that.
I watched last night and am overjoyed at the supposed $900K price. Makes mine worth 7 figures. In reality, I suspect the car was bought for about $200-250K and repaired for another $100-150K, and that all in the car cost no more than $400K. For example, inside of front clam was painted, which tells me it was either repaired or non-OEM, as why hide the carbon/kevlar weave that is ordinarily visible on the underside and looks cool? And I bet they got good money for the take-off wheels, seats and perhaps some other parts. At that level, a cool hotrod F40 project, as I'd never consider hotrodding an original car. And very clever of the team as I bet they got all kinds of free parts and service and now have the viewing public thinking F40s are worth a million dollars so so when it comes time to re-sell, the car actually can turn a profit. Not sure I'd have shown using a hammer on the space frame or cutting and welding to move motor mounts, as even my wife who saw part of the show commented that even she would not trust the frame to be right. And as for the windshield drama, I am going to bet they used a 308 windshield, which fits just fine, but does not have the internal defrost wires.
