F40 owners.

    The other day I was thinking which Ferrari of the 80's I most wanted to own and the F40 is that car, course being only 21 its merely a dream but one I hope to realize with hard work and dedication.

    Question? Is the car all its made out to be, have only met one F40 owner and when I asked him this questio the answer was this "Its a fantastic car, every man should have one" Is it as much of a thrill to drive as is made out to be, because stading next to one is awesome, like being in the presence of something mythical, something very special.

    Basically I am asking a really stupid question....is the reality of having an F40 compareable to the dream....

    Just a little background before I answer.....
    My daily driver is either a 405HP ZR1 Corvettte or a 405HP Z06 Corvette.
    I hold the record in Open Road Racing at 227MPH in a 700+HP modified '92 Corvette. So I guess I am used to a fair amount of torque and Horsepower.
    So to answer your question, YES!! It is very mind mannered down low and pulls like Jack the Bear when it comes into boost. I like the way the car fits. The car gets lot's of attion everywhere it goes. That is either good OR bad. :)
    I treat mine like a regular car.

    Also, I hav been looking to add another Ferrari to my Garage, but I am not sure if any other car will be enough.

    There are two very distinct sides to owning an F40:
    1. Simply staring at it, sitting there like a fierce animal waiting to be let loose. It can hardly be described as beautiful, but it certainly looks menacing like no other car I own. I can spend a long time walking around it, soaking in the fact that it is right there.

    2. Driving the car makes you understand that during its design phase, no-one, least of all Enzo, gave any thought to the practicality of this car. The fact that is is quite docile at low speeds is because it is derived from a 308, but once it gets a bit of gas into the engine and the turbos come on boost it is a maniacal beast, ready to devour anything in its path. It feels like it is going to break loose and spin away from you, especially on cold tires. It darts forward and the slightest steering input moves it off line. When it is moving up on a car the sight of this low, fire snorting apparition is enough to make the bravest driver dive out of the way. It is simply incredible!

    WELL SAID!!! Actually, from the right angle the car is very beautiful! I need to find my picturees taken from above the car.
    How would you compare it with your CS? I am thinking of getting one.
    The worse thing about the car is people like to admire it from your blind spot on the right hand side. I feel kind of dumb having to accelerate to make sure no one is there every time I change lanes.

    Rick, the CS is a really special track car. The biggest and most noticeable difference between the F40 and the CS is the Carbon brakes. They are the most confidence instilling equipment on the car. I have no hesitation going much deeper into a corner because I know I can bring the car down to the appropriate speed to make the turn. The F40 brakes can be a little scary because it takes a lot ot get them up to optimum temperature and when they are cold they really feel like they're just not working.
    The CS is really very Enzo like in the directness of its responsiveness to any input (steering, brakes, throttle) and the F1 really works well. It is so compentent, and as you get to know its limits, rather predictable. Really the opposite of the F40. I'm always a little wary of the F40, and it keeps my adrenaline flowing. The CS is a calm car to drive real fast, if that makes any sense.

    Thats what I needed to hear....funny that I have seen and heard an F50 but really when I see an F40 the feeling is very differant, perhaps its the fact that it was the last Enzo Ferrari Ferrari or maybe that to me it looks years better than the F50.

    The F50 got a carbon tub, and that's a world of difference in feed back. Can't compare the two together. It's like apple and orange, tgey are different fruits

    I enjoy reading your commentaries on your F40's. Although I do not have one, I drive my best friends sometimes.
    I used to want to add one next to my 550 but after listening to my friend who aslways seems to be tinkering with his, I am hesitant. He is always telling me how hard it is to replace parts for it when they are needed as well as the tire replacment dilemna since it uses 18" wheels. My friend is a F purist and will not upgrade the brakes or wheel sizes or use anything other than how the car came originally.
    How do you guys feel about all of this.
    I do love the car though. It is getting harder and harder to find a 2000 pound car.

    I have two sets of wheels and tires, as do most F40 owners I suspect. I recently bought new tires and I had no trouble sourcing exactly the OEM spec tires that were originally delivered with the car. I also have those tires, 14 years old and looking good, but with brittle cracks running through them.
    Mine is a bone stock 92 and there are still several places where I can get pretty much anything I need in the way of parts and there are a couple of really experienced wrenches in Phoenix who know F40's inside and out.

    I have NEVER had problem getting a part for my F40, most parts I get overnight. Tires are not a problem, but you have your facts wrong, a stock F40 sits on 17"s. Alot of us upgraded to 18"s so we can have brakes that actually stop the car. By the way, an F40 is NOT a 2,000lb car! Mine is 2,940lbs wet....

    I agree. I stand corrected about the wheels and the specs. As I said, I don;t own one. I just drive it sometimes. My friend does not drive it a lot, he mostly tinkers with it. A 92 with very few miles on it.
    I must say that driving it is a blast. I have a tendency to overboost at times though.
