74049 is for sale at RM in Monterey. Claimed to be the only F40 prototype, many one off traits, 600hp, Michelotto engine management, adjustable suspension, 400lbs less than a production car, over 230mph capability, less than 600kms since new, suggestions it was Enzo's personal car.

Sounds like an LM in prototype skin. Any further insight would be appreciated.

The F40 came out the year before Enzo died. I doubt he would have been driving around in his 80's in a 600hp F40.

It probably was his personal car,but your right, you wouldnt think he would be able to drive it without power steering and no power assist with the brakes. :)
Let alone 600hp at his right boot. And at 80yrs old,you would wanna be taking it a little easy anyways :)

I saw the car and had a chat with the owner at concorso italiano in 04. As well as the differences already stated, he pointed out a couple of other minor differences to the regular production cars, being the interior headliner, slightly different seats and carpet and below the rear wing there are 5 vertical grills instead of 4. I have a vague recollection that it had a different exhaust to standard and I think he said the doors and front and rear clip were made from carbon fibre. I guess that most other non-LM F-40's are mostly aluminium. He did claim it was the Old Man's personal car too. I was also told there was going to be an article on it in a magazine called Texas Driver not long after concorso that year.

74049 is the fourth F40 prototype built, one of ten. Enzo Ferrari never sat in any F40. I personally attended the press presentation of the F40 in Maranello and Fiorano on Tuesday 21 July 1987 and at the time Enzo Ferrari was already VERY VERY fragile. He spoke for about three minutes maximum, then was escorted by his two bodyguards to the waiting Lancia Thema. After the IAA Frankfurt show in September 1987 this car (74049) was also shown at the Tokyo motor show in Japan in October 1987. Thereafter it was shown at the Osaka showroom of Japanese importer Cornes. It was then sent to USA and ended up with Remo Ferrari/Maranello Motors in Ontario. In August 1994 it was seen at the FCA Nat'l meeting in Monterey.

    Marcel,

Do you have any images from the presentation in the auditorium? I know Ferrari officials requested no photographs but they were taken anyway.

    Thanks,
