Time to fix a number of small things on my F40. It’s been a while since I cut Ferrari a sizable check so my F40 figured to cough up some niggling problems. I’m still amazed on how much the Ferrari name, and the F40 moniker, add to the cost of parts.

The water pump recently started to leak/drip a little.

I’m told a new water pump is >$3k or something to that effect. I also see that Daniel sells a rebuild kit for <$400. The latter is much more to my liking!

However, the shop said that the water pump is magnesium and is prone to pitting and often can’t be rebuilt successfully. He also said that some of his F40 clients have gone with a 308 aluminum pump to reduce such future issues. Really? I’m obviously sticking with the F40 pump.

The pump is being pulled today and will get an opinion on whether it can be rebuilt.

We also seem to need a few injectors as I’m told they’re starting to weep/leak and stick. They said it looks like bad gas over time, but I’ve only used Shell with the occasional Stabil if I’m traveling for more than a month. I tend to go through a tank every 6-8 weeks or so. Seems like that shouldn’t be a problem. I just had the injectors pulled and bench tested 2 years ago. Anyway, I'll have the gas purged and a few new injectors put in.

It’s interesting that the injectors “sticking” (dropping effectively 2 cylinders) only happened in the shop while they were moving the car from place to place. I never experienced anything like that on my own.

Luckily, everything else got a clean bill of health. I guess it could have been a lot worse!!

Tim: Injector stick problem is solved by adding a bottle of swepco 503 to every tank. I'm very much against additives, but this stuff has proven F40 success in ways you can't believe on myriad '40s.

What does the stuff do to the 1980s rubber in the fuel system? The product's web site says it protects the rubber, but they don't talk about what era rubber. That was the first question they asked me when they saw the weeping injectors is if I used any additives other than Stabil.

Thanks for the tip! I'll look into the product. That combined with driving the thing more might do the trick. :)
