Sad to see. Quite possibly the fuel tanks, which are right next to red hot turbos. Not ideal if your tanks aren't top notch. When I purchased my F40 a few years back the UK dealer put in new tanks. Only they were so badly fitted I was driving around in a bomb. Being a novice I complained to the dealer that my garage at home stank of fuel. I was told fuel smell is normal. Trouble was this wasn't a smell of fuel, this was full-on stank of fuel. Another dealer told me not to drive the car, inspected the car and immediately replaced the tanks with US made rubber tanks. The original dealer paid me for the new tanks in full. The car has been perfect ever since. Also European owners of supercars - so I'm told by UK specialists - have a very easy going attitude to service intervals. Some cars aren't serviced for years. UK petrolheads service their cars per manufacturer schedules. It's extremely rare not see a UK owned Ferrari without an up to date service book.
I have seen a few fried F40s now and all seem to start in the same place, I wonder if its is a worn/old hose to the tank breathers etc, the 355 seem to go up in flames in the same area as well. As an aside I bought the tubi fitted to the completely burned out one, it happened on a track day in Spa apparently, was bought by Douglas Valley here in the UK and then went back to europe to be rebuilt. The gearbox is still kicking around on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ferrari-F40-Gearbox-Ferrari-Transaxle-Gearbox-F40-Gearbox-Parts-/281682251360?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4195920e60 Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
