I would be interested in hearing if any F 40 owners have had anything go wrong with the wastegate, if so, please PM me.

I'll try again. Does anyone know how the wategate is constructed, I know it opens when a certain pressure is exceeded, does it close due to spring tension? Is that spring tension adjustable?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

It is adjustable (the nut on the top of the wastegate) but supposedly it was preset when it left the factory. According to the "supercar" mechanic at Ferrari of Orange County he says that it should never be messed with since it is very difficult to set correctly. Obviously, if you're having a problem then you would need to go through a trial and error process. What exactly are you experiencing?

Second that opinion, leave it alone.
Find the base cause to a problem. Adjusting the spring pressure is usually done by those trying to fix / mask another problem.

the problem seems to be that the wastgate is stuck open, and therefore, doesn't allow any pressure buildup with the turbos. The car runs, and the boost gauge indicates that the turbos are trying to build up pressure, but the power buildup is not noticeable. The wastegate doesnt make that wooshing sound it made when it was working properly.

Usually the diaphram is bunched up and binding the valve. Do not touch the setting, just take the hat off and straighten out and refold the diaphram. Polish the internals of the hat so everything slides smoothly when assembled. Normal failure is the valve gets stuck closed and overboosts but it could as easily go the other way.

I am posting this for the benefit of other F40 owners and to express my thanks to those who gave me advice; especially dave helms, who really knows his stuff on F40's.

I took the heat shield and the air duct off the engine around the wastegate, removed the hat off the wastegate, cleaned the inside of the hat with scotchbrite white; moved the wastegate up and a down a few time, made sure the diaphragm was not stuck or bunched up, and put it back together with the help of another gentleman from supercars inc., of road atlanta.
We took the car for a spin. the boost was phenomenal, the wastegate worked well, and the car was a joy and the rocketship it is supposed to be. In case anyone experiences any "loss of boost" or stops hearing their wastegate hissing open to let extra boost out the middle exhaust pipe, maybe this will help.

Again thanks to all, and what a blast a properly boosting F40 can be.

What's involved in removing the hat?

first you remove the air duct that cools the wastegate, then you remove the heat shield below it (careful not to drop bolts and spacers into the engine space) then loosen the top three nuts on the caps, they point right at you, the next three are difficult to remove and when removing the last one, make sure the top nut is in place so that the spring doesnt exert pressure and cause you to cross thread the bolt you are removing.

Once removed, you can simply pull the cap off, and then check the diaphragm's movement up and down and clean the inside of the wastegate cap etc...
