Hi everyone, I am new to this forum. I have not owned ant Ferraris, yet, but like most of you I have had a passion for them since I was a boy. I always like to think ahead so I wanted some opinions of people who have owned both cars. I currently have a 991S and thus far am very happy. I don't foresee much track use for my vehicles. Possibly 2-3 times per year. I love Porsches and Ferraris...who doesn't, but my I wanted to see who can steer me in the wiser direction. I think both cars are gorgeous in their own respects. I assume the Ferrari sounds better. The GT3 tech wise will be better because it's newer. I would be leasing the GT3 if I was to get it, and financing the Ferrari if I was to get that. Mileage would be 5000 to 8000 per year. To own either car and make it a garage queen seems foolish and wasteful. The Porsche seems to be more practical and will get less attention that the 430, which I prefer. The Porsche will be under warranty and more reliable (once they get new engines). I've read the 430's are pretty reliable but I've heard some stories about clutch replacement and Carbon brakes if equipped. If you are knowledgeable about both, please school me. Especially about the merits of owning a Ferrari.
Ownership is very different between these 2 brands. Yes it's been covered before but some bullet points: 1. Driving experience: Ferrari seems to have more "fun" factor, and feels special with each drive. It is an event. Just sitting in the cockpit, hits some thrilling nerves. 2. Handling: GT3 will likely feel much more tighter and direct. 3. Ownership of marque: Pcars blend in everywhere. Less attention by far and away. Ferrari gets a lot of attention and strangers talking to you. But to me this is part of the fun talking about the car. I've met several very cool Ferrari owners and even lifelong friends. 4. Exhaust note: NA V8 with right exhaust can sound like F1. Can't beat that symphonic note. 5. Practicality: 991 will have more room 6. Date nights: my wife likes to take the F car. Problem is that it is low so getting in and out with heels and a skirt is, well tricky. My choice, Ferrari. You only live once. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I have a scud and DD a 991 with the sport design aero (duck tail and front lip). The 991 gets zero attention where I live which is exactly what I want in a DD. I suspect a GT3 would be the same - 99% of motorists wouldn't know the difference between it and a regular 991. If you want a weekend toy, go for the scud. If you want to put on 5-8K miles/year, go with the GT3.
I had a 997 911 Turbo S Cabrio triple black with CCB and it last less than 90 days in my garage... While blindingly fast, high tech, precise, German, German, German...I found it incredibly boring and opted to trade it in on something more exciting. In my world, there is simply no comparing the driving experience of a Porsche 911 to a Ferrari. How the Ferrari makes me feel while driving her is the reason why I now have two of them (2008 430 Spider 6MT & 2013 458 Italia).
Excuse me? I have a 2013 911 S and a 2013 M5...Please enlighten me to how you are aware of my finances. You sir, are an a^%$hole Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thank you very much. Very helpful. This is a real tough choice. My wife loves going out in the Porsche, but from what I understand the 991 chassis GT3 is much better than it's predecessor but still harsh. This may be a conflict. On the other hand, the Fcar would get more attention which can also sometimes be bothersome, and that would annoy her too. This isn't about my wife and at the end of the day I'll get what I want, but I do have to consider her opinion. I guess most of this decision is subjective, but I still want to gather what all of you are telling me. Probably my biggest concern is reliability, clutch replacement, and maintenance. It's likely either version 430 would have 15k+ miles and I would drive more than 5000 per year. Thanks to everyone thus far except for one who replied.
Don't mind some of the others. Welcome to Fchat. If you don't plan to track much, why not just keep the 991S instead of considering the GT3? Looks beautiful in the picture. First model year of the GT3 seems to have some growing pains. Keep in mind a lot of opinions on this forum are going to be biased. IMO, if you want a capable daily driver that attracts little attention and has "go anywhere" capability, you're already driving it. Depending upon where you live, with a Ferrari, you may attract attention anywhere you go. Be prepared for people following you, taking pics, taking videos, asking you stupid questions at stoplights, asking you stupid questions at the gas station, asking you stupid questions any time you're sitting still for more than 5 seconds. It can be very tiring. As you mentioned, the F430 is quite reliable, but just like any car, anything car break at any time. You have to mentally be prepared for that. Nothing is cheap to fix on these cars. Porsche is not cheap either, but as you mentioned, you would have a warranty. Ferrari sounds better. Add an aftermarket exhaust to a GT3 and you've got pretty sweet music as well though. Ferrari is definitely the more exciting car to drive. IMO, if you like cars, like Ferrari, and have the means, you have to try one at some point. We're only here once, and we all have an expiry date. Enjoy while you can. Also, don't forget to do a search. Lots of good info that has been discussed before. Good luck. You can't go wrong with any of those choices.
Would you be keeping the 911 and M5? If yes I say get the Ferrari. If no then get the Porsche. For feeling special and raw it would be tough to beat the 430 Scuderia.
Hi OP - I just came from a 991. To be honest, I will probably never drive a Porsche again. I have owned 993, 997.1 and .2 as well as a 991 (and even a Cayman). Once I sat in the F430 spider, even before I turned the engine on, I knew this was going to be special. And, it was. Its a completely different experience. Porsche, you can drive every day. Heck, I had a baby seat in the back of my 911! Porsche just got really boring for me. The PDK was lifeless - felt very robotic. Good example on how tech advancement may not always improve driver experience. Even though the F1 is older, I have much more fun driving it. You feel the shifting and you definitely feel more alive. To me, the comparisons are tough and in my view, the cars aren't even in the same league. Even for a Gt3. I am not biased b/c I was a lifelong Porsche owner. So, take my word for it. The only item that was very difficult (and still difficult) to come to grips with is the amount of attention you get. Even going to CVS for a quick trip, I walked out and there were 5 people taking a look at the car. That would never happen with a Porsche. Some don't like this type of attention. Porsche, to me, became very very mainstream. Thank Volkswagen. Will Porsche be a wrong choice? No. Just a different experience. You can only decide what you want. Scud great choice as well but I wanted a Spider. 16M was too hard to find.
OP, you've done German , time to go Italian Emotion > judgment Passion > reason Go 430 since you are going to put some miles on it (more creature comforts).
Thanks a lot man. Thats good advice. I won't be making any moves for at least a year. I've been a car guy since I was a kid. I'm Italian so I am partial to Ferrari's in the first place. I love some things about the Pcar but I always felt also that Fcars are above all. Plus the GT3 is mostly for track and I doubt that will occur often (no, I don't want the Turbo, I prefer RWD). It's funny you say about people bothering you. I could only imagine. There are some cool people and some stupid people. My favorite is when degenerates come and ask me; Yo, how much you pay fo dat? The 991 and M5 get some attention, but where I live Lambo's and Ferrari's are pretty rare so I would stick out like a strobe light. I am crazy fanatical with my cars so parking it and leaving it unattended would be burdensome to my mind. BUT, that's the nature of owning such a piece of mechanical art.
Probably not...but right now I have the best of both worlds. Believe it or not the M is my favorite. I do a lot of highway driving and that thing is absurdly fast and comfortable. I could get rid of both and get any Ferrari I want, but it would be hard to be without that fast comfy car...Plus I have kids, so it's nice to be able to take out my 600 hp family sedan. How it's looking now is that I would downsize and get the new F30 M3 sedan and either get the GT3 or 430.
I would suggest to go visit a dealer that has 430s in stock, explain to them your considerations, and see if you can get to drive one, perhaps even a Scud. I think getting behind the wheel of one may help answer whether a Ferrari trickles your senses. The reality is that some end up with maintenance drama while others have nothing but regular maintenance like fluid changes, etc. If you don't track it I wouldn't worry about CCB brakes, and I wouldn't worry about the clutch either. There really isn't much I would worry about on a 430 - maybe listen for header leaks and check for broken exhaust brackets. Jes
Hmmm tough choices but very nice problem! For me the best way is get a scud and keep your M5 for your daily car. I have a 997 GT2, BMW 1M and a 430 Scuderia... I love all of them, each car has their own characteristics. All I can say is that you really can't go wrong with a 430 scud thats for sure
Had an amazing 997GT2 modded to 650hp and suspension to perfection. Now that I have my Scud, several neighbors are asking for a ride. This never happened in my GT2. When I know I am about to take it for a drive, I am humming and skipping around the house like a little boy. This is my experience.
Don't hesitate to to by a F430 or a Scud. These cars are very reliable, I had much more technical problems with my earlier BMW's then with my Ferraris. Regarding fun factor the Ferrari is playing in another world then the Porsche. If you have the possibility to buy a Ferrari - do it - to own a Ferrari is part of the life plan like the planting of a tree
One thing to keep in mind when these decisions come up is "you aren't marrying the car". Meaning, you can date around. 991S? Sure. 991GT3? Absolutely! Ferrari 430? Of course! Try them all over time.
went thru similiar process and F430 is def. the better choice. but do be prepare for all the (un)wanted attention and comments (mostly all positive thus far). Compare to leasing the gt3, the f430 will probably cost less in ownership. F430 is very capable as daily as well. good luck!
