McLaren 650S roadster - great steering, faster than 458, practical everyday, nice ride, fantastic handling, doesn't sound as good as a 430/458 but not that bad

Aston V12 Vantage S - feels as fast as anything out there, and engaging at normal/legal speeds when you have to deal with them (as some people on this board do), a bit crazy but still has that Aston elegance when you need it, and more fun than the bigger Astons

    Scuderia.

If you are looking for rarity, consider long term the forthcoming Alfa Romeo Giulia, but if not exotic enough, a Lamborghini has the third least presence on the road.

    US 2015 Annual Car registrations:-

    Mercedes-Benz - 372 977
    Porsche - 51 756
    Tesla - 26 608

    Bentley - 2686
    Ferrari - 2124
    Aston Martin -1020
    Lamborghini - 1009

Or a Maser MC Stradale Gran Cabrio if you have kids/dogs/shopping..sounds better than any Ferrari. Handling a bit average and not that fast but looks cool.

But if you liked the F Type R, you'll like the Aston, 12 months old, bit of depreciation done.

Go test drive a 4C Alfa Romeo. It's such an animated and exciting car. Quick, sexy and impracticable. The instrument cluster reminds me of the aventador, the shifts are like a 458 and I don't think I've ever been in a car with so much turbo boost. It's almost like a shifter kart with a sexy shell.

NEP, that's an awesome list. Makes me realize how rare the lambos are and come to think of it I definitely see more of the ferraris around here. Especially the 430 and 458.

The thing about McLaren is that they are too expensive, not the prettiest of cars (to my eyes anyway) and people don't know what they are. They are without doubt great cars, though.

It's the second time today that someone has mentioned the Alfa Romeo. Hopefully the build quality is better than their old cars. I think Jeremy Clarkson once said "alfas are cars meant to be great, briefly".

I'm looking for a used car, don't want to take too much of a hit on depreciation.

On a second note I saw James bond Spectre last night and I liked that Aston Martin. Traditionally the Astons haven't been keeping up with the performance and build quality of their competition though so I'm not sure about it either.

** edit - didn't realize the Spectre car was bespoke and won't go into mass production. Too bad.

The MP4-12C has already taken quite a bit of depreciation. Does it matter if people don't know what it is as long as it drives well?

    All the best,
    Andrew.

How about a Porsche GT4? Relatively cheap, mid engined, enough visceral feel, good engine sound, good reliability and a warranty. Not bad in my book...

    Ferrari 599 HTGE,

It is very fast and a good blend of sportscar and GT. If money allows, an F12.

Don't know what your thoughts are about the FF, but at the moment, you get a hell of a lot of car if you buy used. You should go and drive one it is enticing to say the least and the next-best ting after an F12.

He should choose the Mercedes SL, which he considers in the thread title. Probably the best choice, if a Ferrari bores him.

1999 SL73 AMG with the engine subsequently donated to the Pagani Zonda!

Or the original Kompressor SL55 AMG with F1 pack.

Neither will depreciate any more. Probably the opposite.

SLS AMG, already a classic (but more the gullwing than the roadster) - won't depreciate and more fun than any SL. Except maybe

SL65 Black which was the craziest of all of them to drive. But roof no open.

This is what I was thinking. At least worth a drive.

Or if you can spin it, 458 Speciale, but probably still too $$.

Unfortunately I think it's just going to be too hard to convey over a forum what is best for you. It's almost like asking who you should date? So many nuances and qualitative components to your question. I think the only way you'll really know is to drive them all and get what speaks to you.

Oh btw, what are you currently driving and what are you thoughts on it? That might help folks here to give you additional guidance.

    Cheers

Definitely true, I just thought I'd get some opinions on cars I might have missed in my search. I'm currently in an '11 sl63 which is a VERY good car, but lacks the excitement of a proper sportscar. The sound isn't that exciting, the steering and handling isn't exciting, the power is decent, I love the looks but want something different I think. The 65 was just more power really.

I think the problem is im in love with the looks of the aventador and everything else seems second grade (look wise) but it's just too much damn money. The huracan looks aren't that great in my eyes. I wouldn't consider nissan, Porsche, lotus, Lexus, etc. I think it's gotta be Italian for me to be happy. I guess I'm slowly narrowing it down. Drove the 458 again today on twisty roads and it's so much fun. The spider is sadly a little too expensive still, but the coupe has come down quite a bit so that one is within reach. The Ferrari California is a chick car, the f12 and FF don't look that exciting to me (but no doubt great cars). A guy in my neighborhood just got an f12, sounded great coming down the road the other day and of course it looks good just not drop dead gorgeous, which by the way I don't think the 458 is either. The rear part of it it beautiful but the front leaves some to be desired. Königseggs and the laFerrari look incredible but again just way too much $. Even if I could afford an aventador though id still feel like a nervous wreck driving something that expensive.
How about a murcielago lp640? They are about the same as the 458s but older technology of course. Anyone with experience with one of those? They seem hard to find so I don't know how easy it'll be to test drive one.

Great Post, I think you're doing a good job narrowing your choice for you next car. Looks like you have it down to the 458 or perhaps a LP640. Try and arrange somehow a back to back drive.

Keep up your search and I hope you find your perfect 'dream car'! Make sure you let us know what you eventually go with!

    :)

    Cheers

From everything you said in a prior post- get the 458 Italia. You'll love it. Its not too perfect. The car definitely has "soul"- whatever that is... :) It has it.

Thanks guys, I'm definitely seriously considering the 458 at this point. There aren't any lp640s on the market around here right now, but I'm going to a cars and coffee on Sunday, hopefully there'll be one there that I can at least look at in person. Will keep you guys updated on my final decision! The search is half the fun isn't it?

LP 640 is a pig compared to the 458.....If you actually want to do more than just go fast in a straight line go for the LP for everything else including a way better gearbox get the 458.

Since your main concern related to the 458 is the looks...consider lowering the 458. Will look a lot better. I drove a friend's 458 awhile back. Great car. The posted pic isn't my friend's car.

Interesting the photo makes it look like the 488, the shadows seem like the side scallops.

If I was the OP I'd forget cars, you've lost that loving feeling, go purchase a Dacia for £5995 and buy a bigger house ffs
